A propos de 'used to'
Message de steeve34 posté le 17-05-2006 à 19:43:14 (S | E | F | I)

Bonjour à tous,

Emploi et construction de "USED TO"

1- EMPLOI.

On traduit used to par un imparfait.

2- CONSTRUCTION.

SUJET + used to + base verbale.

B- Aux formes INTERROGATIVES et NEGATIVES on utilise Did.
Did + sujet + use to + base verbale. Did he use to smoke ?
Sujet + did not + use to + base verbale. He did not use to smoke.

Voici quelques exemples.

I used to enjoy it but I no longer do.

As a child I used to go fishing on Sundays.

There used to be a large house here.

Ils n' habitaient pas ici autrefois.
They did not use to live here.

Tu jouais au golf quand tu étais à l'école ?
Did you use to play golf at school ?

There used to be a tree in the garden.

He used to play tennis very well.

When I was a child I would walk one mile every day to go to school.
Every morning the colonel would write a few letters, go and get his newspaper and smoke a pipe.

Mais WOULD ne peut pas remplacer USED TO lorsqu'il s'agit de décrire un état du passé.
EX: Il y avait autrefois une maison ici.
There used to be a house here.

3- Partie lexicale.

to go to the cinema= to go to the pictures.
Spick and span: very tidy and clean. The concil spends a lot of money keeping the town spick and span.
Himself = lui-même. By himself signifie tout seul. He was sitting in the corner by himself.
accident=crash.
Standard of living=Living standard.
The living standard in many developing countries is low.
Attention ! trois fois, quatre fois....----> three times, four times......
Mais
DEUX FOIS-----> TWICE
How often do you go to the cinema ?
Twice a week.----> Deux fois par semaine( n'écrivez pas two times).
Remarque:
Une fois------> ONCE.
To jog = to go jogging.
On holiday= On holidays. Vacation est de l'anglais américain.

4- Variations.
1- In those days, we would go to the pictures every Saturday.
2- She used to keep her house spotlessly clean and tidy.

Voici ma proposition.

1-We used to go to the cinema on Saturdays.
2-She used to keep her house spick and span.
3-He used to collect stamps.
4-Before his crash, the sales manager used to drive his car himself.
5-The standard of living used to be higher.
6-She always used to send me a Christmas card but it's three years now since I last heard from her.
7- It seems to me that in my youth children used to be less boisterous, in those days they did not use to be allowed to speak at table.
8-Did you use to play bridge ?
Yes I did.
So, why don't you play any more ?
I used to go with Mary but since she moved I haven't got any partner.
9-He used to jog twice a week. He finds it too tiring now.
10- Didn't they use to take their holiday(s) at Christmas ?
