Men, women and boats

Here you are, cheer up !

Hello Maya,

Nobody from them knew the color of the sky. Their eyes were fixed on the waves coming towards them. These waves had a blue-reddish color, except the crests that were whites and all men knew the colors of the sea. The horizon seemed going up and down, and around them, there was nothing else to see except the edges of the waves which look like the points of sharp rocks.
A lot of people have got baths bigger than the boat that they were trying to lead in the middle of the sea. The waves were high and strong and each of them made the trip in that small boat a true problem. The cooker was sat on the bottom and looked with his both eyes the side of the boat shared him from the ocean. His sleeves were rolled and the two tails of his unbuntton shirt were hanging whend he bent down to bail out the water.
He was repeting ofthen "We had really escaped from the danger". Saying that, he was looking the rough sea at the east.

Thank you.

Hello Maya!

Here's my try...

Neither of them knew the color of the sky. Their eyes were fixed to the waves coming towards them. These waves were blue-reddish, except the crests which were white and all the men knew the colors of the sea. The horizon seemed going up and down and all around them there was nothing else to see but the edges of waves which looked like sharp tops of rocks.
A lot of people have baths bigger than the boat which they tried to steer at sea. Waves were high and strong and each one caused a real problem to the trip in this little boat.
The cook was sitting at the bottom and stared at the broadside which separated him from the ocean. His sleeves were rolled-up and both of the unbutonned shirt-tails were hanging down when he bent to bail out.
He often repeated "really, we've had a narrow escape!". Saying that, he was looking at the east over the rough sea.

pour cet intéressant exercice.

Hello maya,

Men, women and boats.

None of them knew the colour of the sky(1). Their eyes was fixed to the waves coming towards them. These waves were blue-reddish except the crests which were white and all the men knew the colours of the sea. The horizon seemed going up and down and all around them, there was nothing else to see but the crests of waves which resembled to the peaks of sharp rocks.
A lot of people have baths bigger than the boat which they were trying to navigate on the open sea. Waves were high, powerful and each of them was a real problem for the voyage in this little boat.
The cook was sitting down at the back and have a close look at the broadside of the boat which separated him from the ocean. His sleeves was rolled up and both of the unbutonned shirt-tails were hanging when leaning overboard to bail.
He was often repeating "we had really a narrow escape!." While saying that, he was looking east overthere the rough sea.
(1) J'ai eu envie de mettre: "None of them saw the sky."
maya et bonne soirée.

Et Merci.

It is a pleasure, dear maya, to work for you,now..even on "holiday"..very near the ocean !

None of them knew what colour the sky could be like. They were all staring at the waves flowing towards them. Those waves had a reddish-blue colour except for their white -capped crests . All the men knew the colour of the sea. The horizon seemed to dance up and down and they had nothing else to see around them but the edges of the waves which looked like sharp rocky tops.

Many people must have bigger bathtubs than the boat they were trying to helm in the open sea. The waves were high and powerful. Each of them turned that trip on that small boat into a true nightmare. The cook was sitting at the bottom of it with his eyes glued to the side of the boat which protected him from the ocean . His sleeves were rolled up and the tails of his unbuttoned shirt hung , as he leant forward to scoop out. He kept repeating "We've had a narrow escape, Gosh! we have!" And saying so, he was looking to the East above the rough sea.

Thank you very much...See you
Good luck for the correction!

Hello !

None of them knew what the color of the sky was. They stared at the waves that were coming toward them. These waves were reddish blue except the crests that were white and every man knew what the color of the sea was. The horizon line seemed to keep going up and down and there was nothing else to see around but the edges of the waves that looked like sharp rocky points.
A lot of people have a bathtub even bigger than the boats they try to steer on the open sea. The waves were high and powerful and each one made this small boat trip a real problem.
The cook was sitting in the back and stared at the boat side that was there, between him and the ocean. He had rolled up his sleeves and his unbuttoned shirt hung every time he bent over to throw up.
He often repeated "We did have a narrow escape my friends! We really did !". Said that, he looked to the East over the rough sea.

Thanks a lot !

Bonjour Maya92.

None of them knew the colour of the sky. Their eyes were fastened upon the waves that swept towards them. These waves had a deep purple hue, except for their crests, which were capped with white foam, and all of the men knew the colours of the sea. The horizon seemed to dip and to rise, and all around of them there is nothing to see but the edges of the waves that seemed thrust up in points like rocks.
Heaps of people ought to have bathtubs larger than the boat which they tried to helm upon the sea. The waves were tall and very rough and each of them were a real problem in this small boat.
The cook squatted in the bottom, looked with both eyes at the gunwall which separated him from the ocean. He had rolled up his sleeves, and the two flaps of his unbuttoned shirt dangled as he bent to bail out the boat. Often he said : « Gawd ! That was a near miss !» As he commented it, he gazed eastward over the billowy sea.

I racked my brains to find the mot juste.
Thank you very much.

Hi Maya92.

The skyline seemed going up and down, and around them, there was nothing else to see except the tops of the waves which looked like the pikes of sharp rocks.

The cooker was sitting down at the bottom and looked with his both eyes the side of the boat which parted him from the ocean. His sleeves were rolled and the two tails of his unbutonned shirt were drooping as he was bending to bail out.
He was repeating: "We had really a narrow escape. Saying that, he looked at the East side over the choppy sea."

Thanks a lot.
See you.

Hi everybody,
This text is the beginning of a short story by an American author : Stephen Crane (1871-1900), the story of three men on a dinghy after a shipwreck.
(I must say I have found some of your translations far as good as his text !)

None of them knew the colo(u)r* of the sky. Their eyes were on the waves that came toward them. These waves had a reddish-blue** color, except for the tops which were white, and all the men knew the colors of the sea. The horizon seemed to rise and fall, and all around them there was nothing to see but the edges of the waves, which looked like the points of sharp rocks.
Many people have bathtubs larger than the boat they were attempting to steer on the open sea. The waves were tall and powerful, and each one made traveling*** in the small boat a real problem.
The cook sat in the bottom and looked with both eyes at the side of the boat which separated him from the ocean. His sleeves were rolled up, and the two sides of his unbuttoned shirt hung loose as he bent to bail out the boat.
Often he said, 'We certainly had a narrow escape !'
As he said it, he looked eastward over the rough sea.

(they have been rescued after a night among the sharks..)

* : color : US - colour : British
** : to Violet91's great puzzlement...
*** : traveling : US - travelling : British

That's all Folks, bye and thank you for taking part

Its handles were rolled and the two sides of its peeled off shirt hung when it leaned to bail out. He often repeated "We to it have really escaped beautiful!" By saying that, it looked in the east over the agitated sea
