Bonjour tout le monde
Correction Dimanche 29/10/2006
Les “idioms” sont des tournures de phrases très souvent imagées et pittoresques. En les utilisant dans la conversation (ou à l'écrit), notre anglais devient plus naturel. Les anglophones utilisent beaucoup les idioms.
Par exemple, si je veux dire
- En langage normal: "It's raining a lot"
- En expression idiomatique : "It's raining cats and dogs" "rain cats and dogs" (il tombe des cordes / il pleut à verse).
Spending time
Fill in one of the following words in each space to complete the idioms:
afford, waste(verb), plenty, make, save, run out of, spare, waste(noun), value, short of, precious, spend
1. There's .......... of time. Don't worry! The train doesn't leave for an hour.
2. If you're thinking of going to see the new Speed movie, don't bother. It's a …….............. of time.
3. Sorry I wasn't able to get that book for you. I have just ..............time.
4. Can you.....a minute or two? I just want to ask you something.
5. I hate airports. You .......... so much time just queuing!

Bonjour félin,
Je sais que ce n'est pas le but de l'exercice mais je me suis amusée à traduire vos phrases; qu'en pensez-vous?
1. There's plenty of time. Don't worry! The train doesn't leave before an hour.
Il reste encore beaucoup de temps; ne t’inquiète pas. Le train ne part que dans une heure. [ponctuation correcte ?]
2. If you're thinking of going to see the new Speed movie, don't bother. It's a waste of time.
Si tu as l’intention d’aller voir le nouveau film de Speed, ne te fatigue pas. Ce sera une perte de temps.
3. Sorry I wasn't able to get that book for you. I just ran out of time.
Désolé, je n’ai pas pu obtenir / acheter ce livre pour toi. Je n’en ai pas eu le temps.
4. Can you spare a minute or two? I just want to ask you something.
As-tu une minute ou deux? Je veux juste te demander quelque chose.
5. I hate airports. You waste so much time just queuing!
Je hais les aéroports / aérodromes. On perd tellement de temps à faire la queue !
6. I work long hours so the time I spend with my family is very precious to me.
J’ai des journées très longues ce qui fait que / donc le temps que je passe avec ma famille m’est très précieux.
7 If you want to get to college quicker, save time: don't drive, buy a bike!
Si tu veux arriver à l’école plus vite, gagne du temps : ne prend pas la voiture mais achète un vélo.
8. I think we should hurry up. We're short of time.
Je pense qu’on devrait se dépêcher. Nous n’avons plus le temps / nous sommes en retard.
9. I don't get home till 9 o'clock every night, so I value the free time I have at weekends.
Je ne rentre pas avant 9 heures tous les soirs, par conséquent j’apprécie mon temps libre le week-end.
10. There's no way I can make the time to see you before the end of the week.
a) Il n’y a pas moyen de trouver le temps de te voir avant la fin de la semaine.
b) En aucune façon je ne peux consacrer du temps pour te voir avant…
c) Je ne peux en aucune façon trouver le temps pour te voir avant…
11 I'm sorry I can’t afford the time right now. I've got a plane to catch.
Désolé mais je n’ai pas le temps maintenant. J’ai un avion à prendre.
12 I've had to go the doctor about my eyes. I spent / spend at least 6 hours a day in front of my computer. [le présent serait-il possible ici ?]
Je dois aller chez le médecin pour me faire examiner les yeux. Je passe au moins 6 heures par jour devant mon ordinateur.
Merci à vous et bonne journée.
