Bonjour.
Le gérondif (gerund in English) a la même forme que le participe présent:
playing, drinking, running...
Son emploi est une source de problèmes divers, et les étudiants sont souvent confrontés aux difficutés de son utilisation.
En particulier, les verbes suivis d'une forme en ING sont des pièges redoutés.
Le gérondif peut être employé
1- Comme sujet.
« Translating these sentences is awfully boring.»
2- Après une préposition.
« I'm sorry for keeping you waiting.»
3- Après certains verbes.
« He narrowly escaped being run over.»
4- Dans la formation de noms et adjecfs composés.
« Dining-room, sewing-machine, fast-running, easy-going.»
Mais il a encore d'autres emplois que je vous laisse découvrir en ouvrant un bon livre de grammaire.
Je vous propose de traduire les phrases suivantes.
Niveau :
Correction: 6 novembre 2010.
Cela vous permettra de consulter vos livres de grammaire.
Pas de précipitation, prenez tout votre temps.
1- Je me souviens de lui avoir passé un coup de fil pour lui remonter le moral.
2- Cela ne sert à rien d'essayer de changer le monde.
3- Je regrette d'avoir parlé si durement à mes collègues au cours de la réunion hier soir.
4-Voilà deux mois qu'il est parti, aussi j'attends de le revoir avec une impatience fébrile.
5- Le fait que Jean refuse de donner le bras à Marie est plutôt surprenant, tu ne trouves pas?
6- Un tire-bouchon est un outil pour déboucher les bouteilles.
7- Il ne voulait pas courir le risque de faire une erreur, aussi a-t-il demandé des conseils à son ami.
8- Je n'ai pas pu m'empêcher de rire quand je l'ai vu dans cet accoutrement.
9- Je ne pense pas que le fait qu'il la taquine sans cesse la fasse changer d'avis.
10- Elle a renoncé à se plaindre d'être au chômage, et a décidé de créer sa propre entreprise.
11- Le fait que Marie n'ait pas été admise à l'université a surpris toute sa famille.
13- Loin d'être la fin de cette histoire, ce n'était que le début.
14- Obtenir des renseignements de cette société, c'est comme tirer de l'huile d'un mur.
15-Je pense que cet exercice vaut la peine d'être fait.

Les shadoks font ce qu'ils veulent, mais pour ma part, je te le jure, les yeux dans les yeux ( expression très en vogue...), je n'ai pas pompé sur Monsieur Gérondif alors que la tentation était pourtant grande !!!Let's go !

3) I regret speaking / I wish I hadn't spoken so severely to my colleagues at the yesterday evening's meeting.
4) It is two months since he left now, so I'm longing to see him again.

7) Afraid of taking the risk of being mistaken, he asked his friend for advice

here is my try:
1-I remember calling him to cheer him up.
2-It's no use trying to change the world.
3-I regret speaking so harshly to my colleagues at the meeting, yesterday night.
4-It's two months since he left, so I'm looking for him to come back very soon.
5-Jean refusing to give Marie his arm is rather surprising,don't you think so?
6-A corkscrew is a tool for uncorking bottles.
7-He didn't want to run the risk of making a mistake,so he asked his friend for some advice.
8-I couldn't help laughing when seeing her in such a getup.
9-I don't think he'll make her change her mind by teasing her continnually.
10-She gave up complaining to be out of work and she decided to establish her own businness.
11-Marie's whole family was very surprised with her falling university entrance.
13- far from being the end of that story, it was only the beginning.
14-Getting informations from that firm it's like drawing blood out of a stone.

In sentence number 5, I couldn't help noticing notrepere is the only one who puts John (not John,np..however) Jean's refusing(which grammatically makes sense to me), whereas I cannot analyse which part of speech the word refusing is in Jean refusing

Hello may. In English, the name Jean is usually a woman's name so I decided to use the English equivalent so as not to create ambiguity. As far as sentence construction, this is a possessive used before a gerund. I may be wrong, but I believe that not using the possessive before the gerund turns "refusing" into a participle.Here are some pages that may interest you:

J'ai eu du mal avec le vocabulaire (vive le dictionnaire !) et l'expression "tirer de l'huile d'un mur" que je connaissais pas en français et pour laquelle j'ai honteusement pompé sur les autres posts.
J'ai aussi eu des soucis sur l'ordre des mots :
a bottle opening tool ou a opening bottle tool
Mary not being admitted ou Mary being not admitted
all her family ou her all family

Phrase 1
Remember est suivi d'un infinitif lorsqu'il exprime une action qui doit être accomplie (idée de futur) et d'un gérondif lorsqu'il s'agit de l'évocation d'une action révolue(idée de passé)
Remember to lock the door behind you when you leave.
I remember locking the door last night on leaving the premises.
Phrase 2
It's no use + V-ING ──► cela ne sert à rien.
It's no good + V-ING
What's the use of + V-ING ──► À quoi bon.
It's no use trying to call him, the phones are out of order.
What the use of redecorating the bedroom ? We'll be moving out in three months' time.
Phrase 3
Même remarque que pour la phrase 1

Phrase 4
To look forward to + V-ING ──► Attendre avec impatience.

Un gérondif peut-être accompagné d'un adjectif possessif, d'un nom au cas possessif, ou d'un complément introduit par OF.
I like his singing ──► J'aime sa façon de chanter.

Ken's driving is a little erratic ──► Ken conduit d'une façon excentrique.
AttentionSi le sens est « le fait de ...» et non « la façon de...» , on omet très souvent la marque du cas possessif.
Dans la phrase « Ken's driving is a little erratic. », le «'s» est obligatoire car il s'agit de la façon avec laquelle Ken conduit sa voiture.
