hello everybody ! " the perfect use of a language is that in which every word carries the meaning that it is intended to , no less and no more " c connolly , ennemies of promise . I want to know what is the difference when we say : find in the text a word closest in meaning to.... for example : meet _ gather . Even if in the text the word "gather " is : he gathered alot of money " is it correct to say that it has the same meaning to "meet" . How about synonyms . I often face this problem . I need your help . Bien le bonjour à tous ! A quel moment peut on dire que tel mot est synonyme d'un autre ou a presque le meme sens . Je retrouve souvent dans des études de textes et notamment en Anglais ce probléme . thank you .

lorsque, pour un même contexte, ils s'emploient de la même façon et traduisent la même idée. mais dans un contexte particulier, et bien défini.

Yes , I did . The example given above : to meet / to gather . But . a teacher told me that they are closest in meaning . I don't think so because as you said the context is very important . What do you think ? than

you're right ! Dans le sens général, to meet c'est rencontrer, et to gather c'est rassembler . Donc, pas synonymes hors contexte.

Maybe it could help if you gave us the context ? Could you quote the sentences you were given as an example ? Up to now I can't think of any where these two might have the same meaning...

the sentence was : he gathered a lot of money ( in the text ) and the question was : find in the text a word closest in meaning to : meet . I hope you'll give me your point of view .

Eh bein, ce n'est pas gather ... sauf s'il n'y a que cette phrase ... et encore en ayant beaucoup d'imagination ; tu pourrais nous envoyer le texte entier s'il existe ?

comme le dit ton intitulé c'est un mot se RAPPROCHANT (close, the closest => le plus pres ) mais ce n'est pas un synonyme...

Industry is one of the most important signs of development and progress . Infact , it is good to one’s country to be developed but what price to pay for it ? Did man think to the consequences or does he just gather a lot of money ? One of the worst disadvantage of industry is pollution . Every year , the industry causes a lot of damages to the human health such as : stress and asthma . What about the sea creatures ? Alot of chemical substances thrown in seas and oceans have already killed many fish and marine life . Nowdays , many associations in the world fight in order to stop or reduce this disaster .
The question is : find in the text a word that is closest in meaning to : meet .
