CHARITY BEGINS AT WORK
Deborah Allen is a perfect example of charity professional. She started her career as a ballet teacher before getting a job as a part-time typist in a school of architecture. She stayed there for 13 years. during this time, she took several Open Univeristy courses* before leaving to study History of the Modern Third World full-time at the University of London.
Holidays meant volunteer work in a project in Vietnam and during term, she did unpaid work for a charity organization.
When she graduated *, Deborah found work through a charity recruitment* agency as a secretary in the education department of "Save the Children*". She has now been there for a year and she works with schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. "I love the variety of my job" says Deborah now 42, and a single parent of a 17-year-old son. Her work includes organizing conferences, asking volunteers to go into schools and talk about their financial problems and setting up* special events* such as the recent Refugee Week in Birmingham.
"In Britain, we have a tendency to feel superior to other cultures, and that's wrong. I'm determined to change attitudes" she says.
