Conjonctions: And - But
Conjunctions are words used for joining words, phrases or sentences together (e.g. and, but, if, so, because).
The commonly used among the conjunctions are AND and BUT.
Let's explore the uses of these two little words. AND - BUT
-> Use AND to indicate that one action follows another in the arranged order.
Examples:
(1) The boys laughed cheerfully and jumped out.
(2) He parked the truck in front of the house and headed down the hill.
(3) Carmen brushed them away and returned to her prayer.
-> Use AND to join similar ideas together.
Examples:
(1) Susan is smart and kind.
(2) Mrs. Smith seems nice, and pretty too.
-> Use BUT to join contrasting statements (= unlike, opposite or different statements).
Examples:
(1) It was a sunny day, but the wind was cold.
(2) He was ill, but he went to work.
(3) She is poor but honest.
In summary: and (for similar ideas).... but (for opposite ideas).
Of course, there is a little test for you! It isn't difficult, just complete the sentences with 'and' or 'but'.
