Saint Nicholas

    It is believed that St. Nicholas was born sometime around 280 A.D. near Myra (Turkey)

He was a friend to the poor . He became a bishop and continued helping people all his life.

He is the subject of many legends.

    According to one of them he is said to have restored to life three children

     who had been chopped up and put in salt by a butcher. 

    Santa Claus

   Later in some countries St. Nicolas became Santa Claus. People say that now he lives

     on the Arctic Circle in Santa Claus' village near Rovaniemi (north of Finland).

        There he makes toys for children with the help of the elves.

  On December 24th he travels  around the world by sleigh. His sleigh is pulled by a team of eight

  flying reindeer. Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer, is the leader of the team.

  During that night Santa Claus delivers Christmas gifts. He uses the chimneys of the houses to put

  the parcels in front of the fire-place or under the Christmas Tree. 

    The fir tree is beautifully decorated with Christmas balls, bells,

   lights, tinsel and there is often a star on the top.

 Holly and     mistletoe are also traditional Christmas decorations.

  On Christmas morning when the little ones discover the lighted tree and unwrap their parcels,

   it is marvellous to see their eyes full of joy and amazement.

   It's the most wonderful time of the year.

     There'll be much mistletoeing

      and hearts will be glowing,

   when loved ones are near.
