 At nine o'clock sharp (sharp adv. fam.)   :  à neuf heures pile  (précises)

                The trial is adjourned until Wednesday morning at ten o'clock sharp.
                         Le procès est reporté à mercredi matin 10 heures précises.

 For ages adv. : for a long time
   depuis longtemps, très longtemps, depuis une éternité.

            That's wonderful, I hadn't seen a solar eclipse for ages!
                C'est splendide, je n'avais pas vu d'éclipse de soleil depuis une éternité!

 A month of Sundays (familier): a long period of time ( literally thirty Sundays or thirty weeks)

  I met Sarah yesterday. I hadn't seen her in a month of Sundays.
    J'ai rencontré Sarah hier. Je ne l'avais pas vue depuis très longtemps.

 As long as a month of Sundays: long comme un jour sans pain.

 Shelf life: it's the length of time a product can be kept before it becomes too old for use.
                     durée de conservation d'un produit

   Bread, fruit, dairy products don't have a long shelf life.
      Le pain, les fruits, les produits laitiers n'ont pas une longue durée de conservation.
  

 Five o'clock shadow: the beard a man has at 5 o'clock when he has shaved his face in the morning.
   (quand il s'est rasé le matin)

 Make a killing (informal): to make a lot of money in a short time.
    (gagner beaucoup d'argent en peu de temps.)

           My friend John made a killing on the stock market.
                Mon ami John a réussi un beau coup à la bourse.

 Hand to mouth  (littéralement de la main à la bouche)
      a hand-to-mouth existence means that you have just enough money to live.
        vivre au jour le jour, tirer le diable par la queue.

       In that situation you have a hard time making ends meet.

 Penny-pinching  adj. (inf.)  unwilling to spend money 
                    réticent à dépenser son argent (radin / grippe-sou)   Synonyme: mean

   Le gouvernement cherche tous les moyens possibles pour faire des économies.

 Chicken feed  n. (fam.) insignificant amount of money   (= peanuts) 
    (une somme d'argent dérisoire)

  The amount of money I could lend him was chicken feed compared to what he needed.
     La somme que je pouvais lui prêter était dérisoire comparé à ce dont il avait besoin. 

 Keep the wolf from the door.  to have enough money to be able to eat and live. 
       (gagner assez pour manger et vivre.)

     John and his wife didn't earn much, but it was enough to keep the wolf from the door.
             (John et sa femme ne gagnaient pas beaucoup,  mais c'était assez
                 pour être à l'abri du besoin.)

 Loan shark   someone who lends money at very high rates of interest
      (usurier)

    I advised Phoebe not to borrow money from a loan shark, but she didn't listen to me.
          J'ai conseillé à Phoebe de ne pas emprunter d'argent à un usurier,
          mais elle ne m'a pas écouté.

   It will cost her an arm and a leg. (Cela va lui coûter très cher)

  To cost an arm and a leg:  coûter les yeux de la tête.

 Nest egg: money saved for the future. (pécule, cagnotte)

     I often tell my friend Lucy that she should build a nest egg for her retirement.
       (Je dis souvent à mon amie Lucy qu'elle devrait se constituer un pécule
  pour sa retraite.)

 On a shoestring: (US inf.) with very little money   (avec peu de moyens)

          Fred had lived on a shoestring for years before he won the lottery.
                (Fred a vécu pauvrement pendant des années avant de
                 gagner à la loterie.)
