Iroquois

Also called The Five Nations People, the Iroquois are Amerindian people whose traces dating from the 10th century BC were discovered. In 1500, those people were made up of 100,000 individuals and populated the northeastern region of the United States and southeastern Canada, the current States of Ontario, Quebec, New York, Pennsylvania, around the lake Ontario.

They did not move on horseback and then made snowshoes to move in winter; they also made canoes to navigate the many rivers in the region, the latter being made either birch bark among the Huron or Elm among the Iroquois. They ate corn, squash and beans as well as wild turkey (now extinct) and partridge. They also made corn cakes. They picked up savoury strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, currants and nuts.

The region was colonised by the French, Dutch and English at the beginning of the 17th century. It is said that the island of Manhattan was bought from Indians by a Walloon for 60 Florins in 1624.
