Modals serve to express all the facts which are not (or not yet) real:

Possible fact, probable,necessary, wished, future, supposed.

List of modals:

Can	could
May	might
shall	should
will	would
need	dare
Must	ought to

Meaning and use:

Possibility/impossibility:

Can (present) ú it can be a very good solution.

Could (past-conditional) ú When I was young, I could swim for a long distance.

If I were stronger, I could lift the table.

Ability:

Dareú I dare speak to this girl.

Can ú I can run faster.

Obligation:

Ought to -> I ought to go home now.

Must -> you must look after your little brother.

Authorisation

Can(familiar) ->Can I use your pen.

May(official) -> You may take photos in the museum.

Prohibition:

Mustn't ú You mustn't break anything.

May not ú You may not smoke.

Can't ú You can't camp here!

Wish:

Would (like to) ú I would like to stay with my friend.

Could úIf only he could stop worrying.

Advice/Suggestion

Should ú You should take an umbrella.

Could ú You could be more patient.

Might ú You might be in bed.

Reproach/ Regret:

Should +present perfect úyou should have forgiven him, he was a child.

You should have come, it was fun.

Need ú you needn't lie.

Polite Request:

Shall ú Shall I help you / shall we go now?

Will ú Will you stay to dinner.

Repetition(in past)

Probability:

With modals, we can express our point of view: Act is possible, probable, certain, eventual

Probability of an act in present, past or future:

-present: she may be writing

-past : she may have written

-future : she may write

Probability of an act in future

We use May, Might and Should.

Degree of probability
