Voici un thème où vous mettrez en pratique vos connaissances sur le sujet.
Indication:
Vous utiliserez de préférence WOULD pour exprimer une habitude dans le passé.
Autrefois le quartier était très agréable, il y avait de grands arbres partout, et notre maison était la plus grande de la rue. Après dîner, ma grand-mère échangeait quelques mots aimables avec tout le monde et elle s'asseyait près du feu car il y avait une grande cheminée dans un coin. Elle lisait les titres des journaux à haute voix puis elle faisait un somme. Nous ne sommes plus que quatre à la maison maintenant mais autrefois nous étions huit. Le colonel rendait souvent visite à ma grand-mère le soir mais ce n'était pas le seul visiteur. Nous avions, à cette époque, d'excellents voisins !

She would read the headlines of the newspapers in a loud voice then she would have a snooze. Now we are only four at home but we used to be eight. A)- Partie grammaticale.
Phrase 1:
Le marqueur du passé (autrefois), renvoie à un état révolu. Tout a changé.
Les imparfaits seront traduits à l'aide de "USED TO".
Phrase 2:
Dans cette phrase il s'agit d'habitudes prises dans le passé, d'actions itératives.
Après dîner (chaque soir)..... Elle parlait, elle s'asseyait. Ces imparfaits seront traduits à l'aide de "WOULD".
Phrase 3:
Même remarque que précédemment donc "WOULD".
Phrase 4:
Imparfait qui caractérise un état du passé donc "USED TO"
Phrase 5:
Habitudes dans le passé donc "WOULD"
Phrase 6:
Imparfait qui caractérise un état du passé donc "USED TO"
B)- Partie lexicale.
Comment traduire "QUARTIER" ?
1°-Neighbourhood. Evoque l'idée d'un quartier dont les habitants se connaissent tous.
-You are going to wake up the whole neighbourhood with thatb noise.
-Are there any hotels in the neighbourhood ?
2°- Block. Quartier circonscrit à l'espace limité par quatre rues.
- There are now five Mexican families on our block.
3°- District. Quartier dont les limites sont fixées par les autorités municipales, ou qui présente une certaine unité sociale ou architecturale.
- He grew up in a residential district of Paris.
4°-Quarter. Quartier habité par une communauté ethnique particulière.
- She bought a small house in the Jewish quarter of Fes. (Morocco)
Note: Au Maroc le quartier juif s'appelle le mellah.
5°-Area. Partie d'une ville dont les limites ne sont pas clairement définies.
- A working-class area of Birmingham.
Comment traduire "GRAND" ?
1°- Big. Evoque la corpulence en général.Ne traduit pas gros dans le sens de gras.
- Alison is big for her age.
- See the big house over there.
Au sens figuré , marque l'importance de quelque chose.
Well, well, today is the big day then ?
2°- Large. Appartient a un registre plus soigné que big.
-They have bought a large house near Montpellier.
3°-Great. Indique qu'une personne est impressionnante par ce qu'elle fait/ a fait ou qu'une chose est surprenante du fait de sa taille.
- He is the greatest musician of all time.
-Lord and Lady Somerville lived in a great house surrounded by a beautyfully-maintened park.
4°-Tall. Fait référence à la hauteur du corps ou d'une chose.
- Tall cypress trees stood along the road.
Comment traduire "CHEMINEE" ?
1°- Chimney. Conduit d'évacuation de la fumée de l'intérieur d'un bâtiment vers l'extérieur.
- Tonight Santa Claus will be coming down the chimney, you now
2°- Chimney stack. Partie de la cheminée qu'on voit sur les toits.
3°- Smokestack(Am). Grande cheminée d'usine.
4°- Fireplace. Partie de la cheminée où l'on allume le feu, située dans une pièce.
I was standing in front of the marble fireplace.
Note: âtre se traduit par hearth(Am). A log fire roared in the open hearth.
5°- Funnel. Cheminée de bateau ou de locomotive à vapeur.
Comment traduire "PRES DE" ?
1°- Near. A une courte distance. Proche.
- Cheltenham is near Gloucester.
2°- Next to. A côté de.
- I was standing next to John in the queue.
3°- close to. Tout près.
- She's sitting close to me
4°- Beside/by. Près ou très proche de.
-Wendy came up and sat beside me.
Comment traduire " NOUS SOMMES QUATRE" ?
Construction idiomatique.
There are four of us.( expression que l'on peut conjuguer à tous les temps).
Eviter d'écrire: we are four !!! ( pensez à I am twenty)
Ils étaient huit --------> there were eight of them.
Dans un restaurant le serveur demande:
- How many of you are there ? (Combien de personnes êtes-vous?)
réponse:
- There are ten of us (nous sommes dix.)
"ONE"
Pour éviter de répéter un nom dénombrable on peut faire suivre un adjectif du pronom "ONE", "ONES" au pluriel.
- a blue car and a black one.
Après un superlatif "ONE" est généralement omis:
- Your garden is the prettiest.
mais pas après un comparatif:
- This vase is too small, I want a bigger one.
Comment traduire "FAIRE UN PETIT SOMME OU UNE SIESTE" ?
To have / take a nap.
- Grandpa usually has a nap after lunch.

j'aimerais savoir comment traduit-on "Combien êtes vous?"
Je pose la question ici car au dessus, Steeve nous a expliqué comment dire "nous sommes 4...." = there are 4.... of us
Donc je me demandais si pour poser la question on utilisait aussi cette structure idiomatique? Si oui, comment dit-on? Si non, comment dit-on?
