The English pluperfect in ing form will be often translated by a French preterit,just as the English present perfect often is translated by the present.
He had been working for them for several years.
Il travaillait pour eux depuis plusieurs années.
He had been working for them since the war.
Il travaillait pour eux depuis la guerre.

Here are the sentenses to translate in English.
1-Quand je l'ai rencontré pour la première fois,il était en France depuis un an.
2-Il travaillait pour eux depuis plusieurs années.
3-Il travaillait pour eux depuis la guerre.
4-Il n'était plus le même depuis son mariage.
5-Il avait été blessé pendant la guerre.
6-Quand je l'ai rencontré pour la première fois,il était probablement espion depuis des années.

3-Il travaillait pour eux depuis la guerre.
He has been working for them since the war

He hadn't been the same since his wedding
5-Il avait été blessé pendant la guerre.
He had been hurt during the war
6-Quand je l'ai rencontré pour la première fois,il était probablement espion depuis des années.
When I ~~sax~~ met him for the first time, I he had probably been a spy since years.

He hadn't been the same no more since his wedding.
