L'expression du but
Message de jeanmi posté le 16-07-2005 à 23:37:50 (S | E | F | I)
Good evening,
Exemple1 : I'm going to England. So I can learn English.
--> I'm going to England to learn English.
Exemple2 : I'm going to England. So he will see me.
--> I'm going to England for him to see me.
Exemple3 : I am going to England. So I don't forget my English.
--> I am going to England not to forget my English.
Exemple4 : I am buying him a ticket to England. So he doesn't forget his English.
--> I am buying him a ticket to England in order for him not to forget his English.
1. She has written this letter. So you can forgive her.
2. They are coming. So they eat at home.
3. I am calling you. So you can lend me a book.
4. I am writing. So I can have advice.
5. Laurent has created this site. So we can learn English.
Attention à présent à la forme négative.
6. I am stopping now. So I'm not too tired.
7. He's driving his daughter to school. So she won't be late.
8. Bridg watches the forums. So members don't post useless messages.
9. I'm staying inside. So I don't get a sunstroke.
10. I am spreading suncream. So I am not sunburnt.
Bon courage...

Hmm ... le phenomène "to do = pour faire" n'implique pas que "not to do" = "pour ne pas faire".
Pour exprimer "pour ne pas faire":
Dans ex. 3 (où les sujets des deux propositions sont mêmes) il faut mettre "so as":
I'm going to England so as not to forget my English.
I'm buying him a ticket to England in order for him not to forget his English.
On peut (toujours) utiliser aussi "so (that)" (avec "can" à l'affirmatif, mais "do" ou "will" au négatif)
I'm/He's going to England so (that) I/he can learn English.
I'm/He's leaving England so (that) my/his wife doesn't/won't find me/him.
Utiliser "not to do" sans "so as/that" veut dire "pas pour faire". Par exemple:
I'm saying this not to be rude, but to help you.
J'ajouterai enfin que "for one to do" est un moyen général d'éviter le subjonctif. Exemple:
It is important for you to be on time. = It is important that you be on time.
Exemple:
For you to do that would be a big mistake.

Bridg tu as très bien compris mes conseils.

1. Construction avec un seul sujet
--> On peut employer TO, IN ORDER TO, SO AS TO + infinitif
Les formes négatives correspondantes sont NOT TO, SO AS NOT TO.
I need a knife to open the parcel.
IN ORDER TO est plus formel que TO (usage officiel)
--> On peut employer SO THAT + proposition (pour que, afin que)
He took out a loan so that he could finish his studies.
2. Construction avec deux sujets
--> On peut employer FOR + nom/pronom + TO + infinitif
He's brought these magazines for you to read.
--> On peut employer SO THAT + proposition
Call me so that I won't forget.

Hi jeanmi.
I think your source is wrong as regards "NOT TO", which, as I explained, means "pas pour" and not "pour ne pas".
Not to disparage your source, of course; I'm sure it's very good in general. But I wanted to clarify that point so as not to let the reader be misled.
