'Phrasal Verb': To Stand.

Match the verbs with their correct definitions (1/F); then complete the sentences that follow (7/12), using each verb once only:

1/ To stand down; 2/ To stand for; 3/ To stand out; 4/ To stand by;
5/ To stand up for; 6/ To stand in.

A/ To take someone's place.(e.g.While they're out of the office...)
B/ To be better than somebody/something or distinctive in some way.
C/ To represent; D/ To defend; E/ To be ready to act; F/ To resign.

Pas facile les phrasal verbs...

1-F To stand down = To resign
2-C To stand for = To represent
3-B To stand out = To be better than somebody/something or distinctive in some way
4-E To stand by = To be ready to act
5-D To stand up for = To defend
6-A To stand in = To take someone's place

7/ stands for
8/ stand in
9/ standing by
10/ stand up for
11/ stand down
12/ stands out

Hmm ... for me the synonym for "to resign" would be "to step down".

"To stand down" means to give up one's place in a dignified manner. George Bush, talking about when U.S. troops would leave Iraq, said "As Iraqis stand up, we will stand down."

I suppose this term could apply to someone who is resigning from his job, but it would have to mean in a dignified way, respectfully.

2/ "To stand for", is "to represent, to mean", (donc, 2/C).
3/ "To stand out", is "to be better than somebody/something, or, distinctive in some way", (donc, 3/B).

5/ "To stand up for", is "to defend, to reach your aim", (donc, 5/D).
