There are a lot of nuances with these expressions that will take you a while to master. As a general rule, think of these words in terms of their proximity to something. Kind of like you use ici et la.
For example: I read this book yesterday (referring to a book that is close to you). And that's the book I am going to read next week (referring to a book that is further away from you).
You use "it's" when you are talking about an object when it is obvious which book you are referring to: It's a really good book, have you read it yet?
It's true that these are some of the most difficult expressions to really master because their usage varies so much depending on the situation.
