Could the answer be "wholemeal" ? You take out the whole and you still have some meal left over...?
Or is it more twisted than that ?
Ivan.

Ivan !!and your anwser wasnt bad but pj has found it out and so did he with the second one ,
Alright pj, here is another one ,( I m sure u gonna find it out! )
Three men went to a motel. The motel manager said a room cost $30, so each man put up $10 and went to their room. A little while later the manager realized the room was only $25, so he sent the bellhop back to the three guys' room with $5. On the way to the room the bellhop couldn't figure out how to split the $5 between the 3 men, so he gave each one of them $1 and he kept the other $2.
This meant that the 3 men paid $9 each for the room for a total of $27. Add the $2 that the bellhop kept = $29.
Where did the other dollar go?

Thanks for the welcome !
About your latest riddle it's a wicked one which I knew under another form... It was even explained to me by a maths teacher, but I can't really remember the explanation... (maths was never my strongest subject).
I do think the answer involved thinking "differently" and maybe substracting stuff instead of dividing...
Oh, well someone will find it and i'll try to remember it THIS time !
Ivan

Hello morenita,
You cannot add what one person HAS to what someone else has PAID and come up with any kind of a meaningful number, you have to subtract.
Each man has paid $9.
The bellhop has $2. $9x3=$27-$2=$25 Difference:$25
The hotel clerk has the other 25 dollars.
Answer:
To look at it from the standpoint of the original $30.
Each man has $1.
The bellhop has $2.
the hotel clerk has $25
Total: $1x3=$3+$2+$25=$30
Réponse: re:intelligent?-3- de serena, postée le 2004-12-15 00:52:33 (S | E)
I think not any penny is lost here.
We have first 30$.
After, each man has 1$.
So 1 x 3 = 3$
The bellshop took 2$. So we have now : 3$ + 2$ = 5$
Adding this to what the clerk have, we obtain the initiale sum :
5$ + 25$ = 30$
So : there isn't another dollar left.
Well, I see no other way to answer this riddle, and I'm quite sure it's a pitfall text. Am I right my tender morenita ?

How many "did he have left" ? = Combien il lui reste....
You're right gewurz !
In fact, when she says "all BUT 9 died", she means "tous sont morts sauf 9". So, there are 9 cows left, of course.
Ah morenita !!

Hi dandoun !
I thought we were partners here against morenita's riddles.
Anyway, it's ok for me ! Let's try your quizz !
1. "Do they have a fourth of July in England?"
Yes, of course they have it ( what a question ! Unless they have a special calendar.)
2. "How many birth days does the average man have?"
Only one : we are not born more than once.
3. "Some months have 31 days; how many have 28?"
All the months have 28 days, some of them have more ( 30-31 ).
4. "In baseball, how many outs are there in an inning?" : 6
5. "Can a California man legally marry his widow's sister?"
No ! His widow’s sister = his wife’s sister, so this Californian man is dead !!! ( nice question ! )
6. "Divide 30 by 1/2 and add 10. What is the answer?"
70 = 30 x 2 + 10
7. "If there are 3 apples and you take away 2, how many do you have?"
2 ( of course ! as I took them. )
8. "A doctor gives you three pills telling you to take one every half hour.
How many minutes would the pills last?"
60 minutes : He’ll take the first pill and then will take the second after 30 min, and the last one 30 other min later. So, the 3 pills will last 60 minutes.
9. "A farmer has 17 sheep standing in a field and all but 9 drop down and die. How many sheep are left standing?"
9 ( re - of course ! )
10. How many members of each animal did Moses take on the ark?
Moses had a stick not an ark.
11. "A clerk in the butcher shop is 5' 10'' tall. What does he weigh?"
( well, this is too hard for me. Maybe a cow ? )
Thanks dandoun ! Great riddles.
See you !

Réponse: re:intelligent?-5- de gewurz, postée le 2004-12-18 02:02:58 (S | E)
I'd say :
- 1$ an apple for the first
- 50c an apple for the second
- 33.33333333333333333333333333 cents an apple for the last.
but the first seller must sell golden apples !!!
Réponse: re:intelligent?-5- de serena, postée le 2004-12-18 02:06:25 (S | E)
maybe gewurz.
But as I understand the riddle, they sold a same price for all the apples.
Which is quite impossible to have 10$ each.
Hold on dandoun, I'm coming back !

Réponse: re:intelligent?-5- de serena, postée le 2004-12-18 02:18:41 (S | E)
Dandoun, you said above that they sold them for the same price !
Then, I suggest this :
1) 10:10= 1$
2) 20:10 = 2$
Or, we need a same price. Then : 20 apples = 12 + 8
So 2$ + 8x1$ = 10$
3) 30:10=3$
Same hold as for the second one.
30 apples = 12 + 12 + 6
2$ + 2$ + 6x1$ = 10$
12 = a dozen
Then they sold : an apple for 1$ and a dozen for 2$.
And they all have 10$ each.
Correct ?

For the first one you're right gewurz
A small indice : to sell their apples the second and the third followed a little step.
EX:If you are a seller and you want to sell what you have in store, you just try to sell them for a dozen, Right.
So what was the asking price for a dozen??
It's easy now
Réponse: re:intelligent?-5- de dandoun, postée le 2004-12-18 02:23:47 (S | E)
Serena, really great job
You are absolutly right :
The asking price was $1 for a single apple, and $2 for a dozen.
That way, the first person sold 10 apples at $1 = $10
The second sold 1 Dozen at $2 and 8 apples at $1 = $10
The thirds sold 2 Dozen at $2 and 6 apples at $1 = $10
Well done
