A new expression.

Yesterday evening,I asked a couple of English people for dinner.The husband said to his wife:
"You are as much use as a chocolate teapot".
Of course, I didn't understand and showing a chair where anybody was sitting he said:
"this chair is as much use as a chocolate teapot(or a chocolate fireguard).
What does that mean?
