Social Security

I've just read sisterdrey's summary of an article about the French Social Security system, and I was surprised because the system seems very similar to the one in the U.S., and it even currently seems fraught with the same problems that the American system is currently having.
Do you think that Social Security is a good thing? I don't. I don't feel that I should have to pay for someone else's retirement, even if one day I will get the money back (and even that's not guaranteed!). It seems to me that Social Security is a "quick fix" to the problem of supporting retirees, and unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), it is one that is not repeatable. We can no longer tell our workers "give us even more of your money now, and future generations will give it back to you later." We can no longer steal from our children to pay for our elderly.
My ideal solution would be a true socialism, where money doesn't exist, where people work not because they have to but because they want to, where people take only what they need or really want (because it's all free), and people help each other (including the elderly) simply because it's the right thing to do. But I suppose this is a utopian dream.
What do you all think? Should Social Security be changed? If so, in what way? (Feel free to include idealistic solutions as well as realistic ones. )

Hello traviskidd
Your ideas are very interesting but I think it' a utopian dream.
However, I agree with a lot of your thoughts and I think that our governments must be reflect to decide on the future of the world.
