Hi everybody,
I'd like to know if there's a real difference in meaning between:
"I'd like to sleep at a hotel" and"I'd like to sleep in a hotel".
My guess is these sentences are close to the French:
"J'aimerais dormir à l'hotel" et " j'aimerais dormir dans un hotel"
But I'm not quite sure, could anyone anyone help me with this one?
By the way, I have the same question about the difference between " to serve in a canteen" and " to serve at a canteen".
Many thanks in advance,
KAZ.

Hello,
I'd use 'at'. Here is a helpful link : Lien internet
We also use at when we talk about a store or a building. At gives us the nuance about what usually happens in that store or building. Notice the verb is not the be verb but a verb that also describes the usual action in the location.
I bought this shirt on sale at the department store. People usually shop at a department store.
Jack had a coffee at a nice café on Madison Ave. People usually have coffee at a café.
Lets study at the library after class. People usually study at a library.
Then ...we generally sleep at a hotel

Vous parlez de l'anglais américain en indiquant un 1er site américain affilié à Amazon et localisé à Boston, USA....et un 2e : American Media, Inc. 2017
En anglais britannique la différence se fait
