Years /2000-2009
Message from brettdallen posted on 01-10-2018 at 18:23:08 (D | E | F)
Hello everyone,
I was called to mind by a person today who told me that he had been taught to say the years 2000-2009 this way: "twenty O one", "twenty O two", and so on. I used to say "two thousand and one/two..." etc. and it seems to me that almost everybody was doing the same. I might be missing out on something, though.
Could you tell me if you used to do as this person was taught or as I did?
Thank you for your answers.
Brett.

Hello,
I used to explain to my students that, as people were used to saying nineteen o one, nineteen ten instead of the very correct nineteen hundred and one, nineteen hundred and ten, they had gone on doing that with twenty o one, twenty ten which is in theory incorrect as you can't say twenty hundred and one, twenty hundred ten, you have to say two thousand and one, two thousand ten.

Thank you for your answers.
So "twenty O one", "twenty O two"..."twenty O nine" does exist. Am I right? I thought it was just incorrect. In addition, I can't remember having heard people say that. For me, the only correct way was "two thousand (and) one" etc.

Hello,
The only correct way of telling those dates was two thousand and one/and two/...and nine, but 2010 could be said twenty ten....and so on.
It depended on the number of figures after two thousand.
There are so many ways nowadays to tell the dates that we get lost and the incorrect dates become correct out of habit.

Hi,
That's just a small proof that languages are alive
