Bonsoir,
Je viens de finir ma dernière notion pour le Bac, serait-il possible que vous m'aidiez à la corriger ?
Je vous remercie d'avance.
I’m going to talk about the notion of places and forms of power. To begin with, I’d like to give a definition. « Places » could be important buildings or institutions that represent a certain form of power, like the White house which represents the American presidency. A place can also be a country or a state, like the United States of America which is powerful enough to influence events throughout the world.
Secondly, « Power » is the ability to control others, events or resources. It’s also the ability to make things happen despite obstacles, resistance or opposition. This helps to create social cohesion but can also lead to conflicts and tensions.
In relation to the notion, the subject of my presentation will be about the rejection of some people because of the rumors in the United States of America.
We may answer the following question what are the different forms of witch hunting in the United States of America?
First of all, I will concentrate on witches in the 17th century, then I will analyze the supposed communist spies.
In Salem, in the 17th century, a lot of people were accused of witchcraft. Indeed, people died. What made the trials historical was the huge number of accusations and executions.
In the picture “the crucible”, a woman, who is dressed as a Puritan, looks scared and powerless. People are pointing at her, they may accuse her of witchcraft, that’s why she feels trapped.
Moreover, in “overview of the Salem Witch Trials”, we can see there was tension in Salem, there were conflicts about the minister. Two girls started having convulsions, one of them was his daughter, and the other one was his niece. That is what started suspicion. Furthermore, people may have been influenced by a book written by a minister about a previous case of children being bewitched.
The physician, William, was the first to mention the “Evil Hand” because he was unable to cure them. The so-called witches were easy targets because no one cared about them, they were homeless or slaves.
A supposed victim of witchcraft could accuse someone by pretending they had seen their attacker. This method was not reliable. Fortunately, with time, spectral evidence was not allowed anymore. People felt they had been mistaken, they felt ashamed, responsible for what had happened.
After the World War two, there is another witch hunt in the United States of America, named McCarthyism or the second red scare, because the first red scare happened a couple of decades earlier following world war first. The first one was much more about the worker revolution whereas in the second one, people were concerned with foreigners infiltrating the government.
McCarthy appointed to hunt potential communists. He was famous because he was clever and a skillful speaker, it was difficult to know if he was telling the truth or a lie. He failed because he never produced any of his lists of names.
The Rosenbergs were American communists who were charged with passing information to the Soviet Union about the atomic bomb. They were convicted and executed for espionage. Their execution is still controversial.
McCarthy enjoyed using the idea of a blacklist. To be blacklisted meant that you were a communist and that you had to be tried as such.
The Hollywood blacklist were witnesses, they were actors, screenwriters suspected of communist activity. In 1947, they were questioned before the House Un-American Activities Committee and refused to answer because they thought it was unconstitutional and didn’t respect two amendments.
In his play, “the crucible”, set in the 20th century, Arthur Miller draws a parallel between witch hunt and communist hunt, because in both people were accused without any evidences. He had to find a way to denounce what was happening in the United States of America as that time, and both the Salem witch hunt and the red scare were triggered by fear.
To conclude, we can say that the power scared the American society. Witches are burnt and even centuries later, people are frightened by power with the Red Scare so they were paranoid. So, because they are afraid, they rejected people they think possessed, witched, and traitorous by killing them or condemning them to jail.
