Help English Grammar
Message de xuan_ho posté le 17-07-2009 à 16:44:51 (S | E | F)

Hello everybody
I have a trouble with my small test below:
Modern saw blades are coated with a special __________ plastic.
a. reduction of friction
b. reduced-friction
c. friction is reduced
d. friction- reducing
what do u choose ? Why ?
PS:
in according to my opinion, the gap between " a special" and " plastic " is adj/ Noun but options are not adj, so the gap must be "Noun" . Perhaps this is compound Noun, i thought result "d" is the most reasonable. How do u think about that?

Hi!

To get the answer, you need to analyze the words, their function and their meaning:A and C can be eliminated because they can't be used in compound nouns, see their construction...

Then , to get the answer you need to rephrase it:

Here we have a saw blade coated with a plastic cover that reduces friction. So the plastic cover reduces the friction, therefore we can eliminate:

B- because the plastic is not the result of reduced friction

Only remains D: INg form means an action, it works to produce an effect. Here the plastic reduces the friction, so friction-reducing is the right answer.

It is a bit empirical but it works!

Perhaps someone will bring some theoritical background to this!

Cheers

thanks for your answer
i have more question :

1. Jerome Kern's most famous work is Snowboat, _____, most enduring musical comedies
a. it is one of the finest
b. of the finest one
c. the finest one
d. one of the finest

2. By 1820, there were over sixty steamboats on the Missisippi River, _____ were quite luxurious
a. many of them
b. which many
c. many of which
d. many that

What will you choose for two examples abow?

PS:
For case 1, a Word in gap is used to clarify Snowboat, in this case, it must be Noun, so I eliminate A, B
Between C and D, i am bit confused and it seems that both options are rights

For case 2, in according to phrase meaning/ grammar, i eliminate B + D. i chose C because in case of A, "many of them" can not replace steamboats (thing)

How do you think?

1st case: only remain C and D: Comedies is a plural form so you can have ' the finest one' because it is singular or you would the finest most enduring comedies.

Therefore only remains D: one of the finest: it is an extraction => from all the comedies, Snowboat is one of the finest

2nd Case: you're wrong: Them can be used for a human-being or a thing. Yet you're right for this sentence!

Cheers

Sebastien
