up until now /until now

Bonjour,
Up until now – an expression that I've heard and read quite often.
But it's not a 'dictionary' phrase like 'so far', 'by now', 'as yet', 'till now', etc.,
or just 'up to now'
What additional meaning does "up" add to "until now"? Could you give some comments about it?

"Up" ne change pas vraiment la signification (on peut bien le mettre ou l'omettre dans presque n'importe quel cas), mais affecte un peu le sens.
"Up until now" accentue la continuité, ou constance, de l'état passé:
Up until now, she's been a horrible person.
...tandis que "until now" accentue le changement:
She's been a horrible person ... until now.
