Bonjour.
Les valeurs de l'imparfait français sont diverses, et ne se traduisent pas en anglais de manière univoque par was/were + V-ing.
I - Habitude.
a) imparfait = past.
Elle oubliait souvent de fermer la porte à clé.
She often forgot to lock the door.
b)imparfait = would + inf.
En allant à l'école, il passait devant une boulangerie.
On his way to school, he would always go past a bakery.
c)imparfait = used to + infinitif.
Dans le temps, nous allions au cinéma tous les dimanches.
We used to go to the cinema every Sunday.
II- Narration.
imparfait = simple past.(fait habituel révolu)
-Comment les gens se rendaient-ils au travail, il y a 80 ans ?
- La plupart prenait les transports en commun.
-How did people go to work 80 years ago ?
- Most of them used public transportation.
III - Situation.
imparfait = was/were + V-ing.( on décrit ici une situation dans laquelle le sujet se trouvait à un moment donné du passé)
Il écoutait la radio quand le téléphone sonna.
He was listening to the radio when the telephone rang.
IV - Emploi avec since ou for.
Il vivait à Paris depuis des années.
He had been living in Paris for years.
V - Supposition
Si j'étais à votre place , je n'irais pas.
If I were you , I wouldn't go.
Je vous propose de traduire cet extrait d'un roman de Patrick Modiano.
Niveau :
Correction : 13 novembre 2009.
Maintenant, tous les soirs, vers vingt heures, il quittait l'appartement vide de sa grand-mère et prenait le métro jusqu'à Passy. On arrivait alors dans une gare minuscule. Par les escaliers, il gagnait l'un des immeubles proches du square. Au sommet de cet immeuble habitait une femme, de quatre ans son aînée, dont il avait fait la connaissance dans un café au mois d'avril de cette année. C'était une blonde aux yeux verts avec quelque chose de réveur, qui paraissait aussi jeune que lui.
Elle lui avait expliqué qu'elle était mariée à un officier dont elle ne recevait plus de nouvelles depuis le début de la guerre.

I- Dans la première phrase le caractère répétitif de l’action : « … tous les soirs, vers vingt heures…» met en évidence une habitude que l’on traduira à l’aide de « would »
Dans le reste du récit les verbes sont au « simple past ». Au « past perfect » dans la dernière phrase.
II- Métro, underground or subway ?
All the words mean an underground railway system in a large city.
Underground is the usual word in British English. Subway is the usual word in American English.
The Paris métro.
The London underground.
The New York subway.
The Tube : London’s underground train system.
« I go to work on the Tube.»
Ici, seul l’emploi de «métro» est correct.(L’action se déroule à Paris)
On peut dire :
« By métro » ou « On the métro » comme on dit « By train » ou « On the train.»
III- Alors
1- C'est un adverbe de temps.
« C’était la belle époque. Nous étions heureux alors.»
Alors signifie : à ce moment-là.
2- De nos jours,« alors » s’emploie dans le langage courant, dans un récit ou dans la conversation avec des sens variés souvent très vagues. Il a fini par prendre la valeur d’une simple conjonction de coordination introduisant une conséquence.
« Je l’ai rencontré dans la rue hier, alors il m’a dit qu’il avait encore eu des démêlés avec son locataire. »
Ici l’auteur arrête son récit pour revenir sur le présent.
Autrefois, Passy n’était qu’une petite station de métro (terminus). Ce n’est plus le cas aujourd’hui.
Il fallait donc employer « alors » comme adverbe de temps, et le traduire par : « In those days »
IV - « Par un escalier il gagnait…» signifie : il montait un escalier qui le menait …
à traduire par : « He climbed the stairs to …»
« Staircase » est inappropié ici.
Staircase : a set of stairs inside a building.

V - Square or public garden.
VI - Au sommet de cet immeuble . Il s’agit ici du dernier étage . Il ne faudra pas oublier « floor» dans la traduction.
VII - Faire la connaissance de quelqu’un ──► to make sb’s acquaintance.
To meet someone for the first time.
« I’m pleased to make your acquaintance .»
VIII - Comment traduire «DONT» ?
« Whose » établit un lien de parenté ou d’appartenance entre l’antécédent et le nom qui le suit.
L’antécédent peut être humain ou non.
A widow is a woman whose husband is dead.
Une veuve est une femme dont le mari est mort.
The man whose daughter you love is my neighbour.
L’homme dont tu aimes la fille est mon voisin.
The house whose roof you can see belongs to my parents.
La maison dont vous voyez le toit appartient à mes parents.
Dans ces exemples, whose séparent deux noms entre lesquels il établit un lien grammatical.
La structure est :
Nom + WHOSE + nom.
Whose n’est jamais suivi de l’article the.
Toutefois, le second nom peut être précédé d'un adjectif.
Nom + WHOSE + adjectif + nom
Remarque :
Lorsque l’antécédent n’est pas humain on peut utiliser « of which » placé après le nom.
Ainsi on dira :
« My room is the one the windows of which are open.»
Mais on préfèrera éviter cette tournure inélégante et dire :
« My room is the one whose windows are open.»
Mise en garde :
Ce serait une erreur d’établir un paralléle abusif entre « whose » et « dont ».
De nombreuses phrases françaises où figurent « dont » ne sont pas traduites en anglais à l’aide de « whose ». Cela fera l’objet d’un autre sujet.
Voici un exemple.
La fille dont il est tombé amoureux.
The girl who he fell in love with.
Ou
The girl with whom he fell in love.
IX - Avec quelque chose de réveur :
L’équivalent anglais de « réveur » est « dreamy » mais il ne peut être employé seul comme en français, il faut lui adjoindre un nom : air ou look

J'ai beaucoup apprécié ta correction, élaborée comme à l'accoutumée avec un soin méticuleux.
Concernant le fameux fauteur de troubles "alors", tous tes "patients", dont malgré tout je m'honore de faire partie, sont allés droit dans le panneau !
Il faut dire pour notre défense que, par nécessité, nous travaillions sans filet, autrement dit détachés de tout contexte...N'est-il pas ?

A la sortie de chacun de ses romans, Patrick Modiano, paie sa dîme télévisuelle. On souffre autant, sinon plus que lui. C'est chaque fois la même chose : c'est lui qui attire les regards embarrassés, non par ce qu'il dit mais par ce qu'il ne peut pas dire. Or, on a trop souvent attribué cette gêne à sa timidité ou à sa difficulté d'adaptation aux formes modernes du débat (assurance, rapidité, efficacité). Le malaise est peut-être d'une autre nature, du moins, ce n'est pas aussi simple.
Et si paradoxalement, Modiano était à la fois le moins mais surtout le plus "télégénique" de nos écrivains ? Le moins parce qu'il ne parvient pas à exprimer une pensée codée, structurée syntaxiquement etc.... mais peut-être le plus, dans la mesure où cette espèce d'aphasie nous offre, si l'on peut dire, à découvert, une tentative d'écriture orale : dès que Modiano parle, c'est comme si on lisait dans son comportement (voire sa gestuelle: les mains qui tentent vainement de conduire ou d'achever la phrase par des mouvements géométriques) une volonté de recherche: celle du mot juste.
Comme si une sorte de nécessité et de panique poussait l'écrivain à sans cesse traquer l'extrême précision ou l'extrême concision. Trouver à la fois clarté, simplicité et plein sens dans la phrase et dans le mot. Comme si, dès la question posée, s'élaborait tout un travail : une sorte de cheminement intérieur pour accéder à la formulation de la réponse. Cette formulation, quand il y en a une, est condamnée au pathétique: quelques mots, une phrase en suspens... "C'est-à-dire que... c'est compliqué... c'est une espèce de... un univers... bizarre... romanesque..." suivi d'un soupir découragé, comme un nouvel aveu d'impuissance. Parfois, le soupir précède même la réponse, c'est tout dire...
Chaque fois, cette recherche est vouée au désastre : le mot surgit alors, nu et seul, hors de toute syntaxe, lâché comme une balise qui n'éclairerait qu'un vague bout de piste. Le parcours intérieur se poursuit mais inévitablement l'idée se fige sur une expression que l'écrivain répète désespérément en attendant de prononcer la phrase qui dirait Tout. Modiano se débat. "C'est compliqué..." On le sent dans son regard grave et lointain, dans ses gestes qui essaient d'écrire ou de décrire l'indicible.
L'homme est trop pur : timide ou non, il pourrait, par commodité, s'abriter derrière des paravents verbaux. Jouer sur des canevas plus conventionnels, se limiter à des réponses approximatives ou passe-partout. Partant du principe: on ne peut jamais tout dire etc... Il pourrait après tout lâcher quelques phrases énigmatiques ou aussi surprenantes que celles qu'on découvre parfois dans ses romans. Rendre ses réponses encore plus laconiques ou plus nébuleuses. Lancer quelques mots inutiles, comme ces lamelles d'argent qui brouillent plus ou moins l'écho des radars.
Non. Il s'entête et quelqu'un de trop pressé finit invariablement par lui couper la parole. "

I -
On dit:
At 5 o'clock - at lunchtime - at sunset- at night - at the weekend - at Easter
In October - in 1968 - in the past - in the Middle Ages.
On Friday - on my birthday - on Christmas Day ( mais, at Christmas)
Mais on dit :
In the morning(s), in the afternoon(s), in the evening(s).
La bonne réponse : every evening.
II -
a flight of stairs is a set of stairs between one floor and the next.
Ici on ne se trouve pas dans un immeuble
a walk-up (noun)AmE is a building with sevral floors and no lift.
« He went up the stairs » aurait pu convenir.
La bonne réponse : he climbed the stairs
III-
Si le style est tenu chez l'auteur, il faut le tenir jusqu'au bout.
Comme je l'ai fait remarquer dans la correction on peut remplacer le pronom sujet par un pronom complément, mais si l'on emploie le pronom sujet, il doit être suivi d'un auxiliaire, d'un modal ou d'un verbe lexical.
Voici des exemples tirés de « Cambridge Grammar Of English » ( 978 pages)
page 382 § 200
After as , like , than , but, and except, subject forms are used in more formal contexts. They are normally followed by auxiliary, modal or lexical verbs.
She can swim better than she can.
We certainly work as hard as she works.
IV - A woman (that)he had made acquaintance with.?
L'emploi de « dont ».
Á l'époque où j'étais à l'université pour le plaisir, notre professeur d'anglais nous affirmait, et je partage tout à fait son point de vue, que les difficultés de traduction de « dont » provenaient davantage du français que de l'anglais, et j'en veux pour preuve les traductions qui m'ont été proposées ainsi que la vôtre.
V-
Comme je l'ai mentionné, un adjectif épithète ne peut pas s'employer seul comme en français.
Il lui faut un nom ou un pronom de support.
Les noms-supports qui pourraient être : fellow, thing, creature, soul perdent toute valeur propre après un adjectif.
Poor fellow ! le pauvre!
The silly thing got run over! La sotte s'est fait renverser !
VI- The beginning = the start.
Cette mise au point me semblait nécessaire.

Non point de guéguerre ndge...je me suis exprimée poliment et soumis des points de vue différents,maintenus d'ailleurs.(something est un pronom; older than he (tt à ft tenu);begin implique une intention )..

Il me semble nécessaire d'apporter 3 précisions en ce qui concerne le post de taconnet:
V- With something dreamy about her.- un adjectif peut être employé seul lorsqu'il désigne une catégorie comme the poor, the rich, the dead et quelques autres.
Ici il s'agissait de 'dreamy' et on peut dire 'something dreamy',l'adjectif n'étant pas isolé mais en relation avec 'something'.
III- Four years older than he
Le pronom personnel sujet peut se trouver seul en fin de phrase comparative, dans un style très soigné; exemple:
He is more troublesome than I.
VI- The beginning = the start.
Oui bien sûr ce sont des synonymes mais on parlera de 'beginning of the war/beginning of the year...' même sans analyser la notion d'intention.

Adjectifs pris substantivement :
Je connais la régle d'emploi des adjectifs substantivés.Rien à voir avec le sujet.(the rich : les riches - the poor : les pauvres)
Pour ceux qui voudraient en savoir davantage un adjectif abstrait peut suppléer un nom abstrait.
The ideal is often finer than the real.
L'idéal est souvent plus beau que le réel.
les adjectifs désignant un langage
He learns Latin and Greek.
Il apprend le latin et le grec.
Certaines locutions familières traitent l'adjectif comme un nom.
My dears - your betters - the elders.
Concernant « something » je n'ai rien trouvé.

D'autre part, si vous considérez que c'est correct, pourquoi ne pas l'avoir proposé dans votre post ?
Je reste sans voix car on ne peut pas tout justifier,avoir des sources sur tout; en outre on peut toujours traduire une phrase de façons différentes, et j'espère que là je ne vous apprends rien.
La discussion étant impossible et stérile je cesse de perdre mon temps.
