Who are they?

Hi every one,
First of all, I want to apologize for my horrible english, but am I not here to learn?
I didn't practice since...phewww...It was such a long time ago I can hardly remember.
I began my new start with english about three or four years ago with reading of comic books. Now I also read novels, since about one year and a half with authors like Ken Follet, Joe Abercrombie, Robin Hobb and, currently, Arthur Conan Doyle.
But I didn't come here to tell my story. My question is about old fashioned comic books from ealy 60's.
I read several times these two expressions :
The first one is : "For Pete's sake!" or "For the love of Pete!"
The second one is : "What in Sam Hill is going on around here ?"
So my question is who are "Pete" and "Sam Hill" in those sentences ?
I thank you for your answers, and for showing me the mistakes I madee in this post.

Bonsoir.
Ce sont des interjections idiomatiques :
for Pete's sake!
