Labour shortage
Message de loupevivante posté le 07-02-2010 à 00:20:12 (S | E | F)

Hi! Could you check my text please to correct mistakes? Thank you for your help.

That national topical subject concerns our generation as much as the one of our parents and the next one. Because we will have to choose our career soon, to orient ourselves in a specific labour market, we should keep abreast of these future requests. By the time being, the situation is already problematic: many sectors feel the effects of that shortage. Under these circumstances are hid two major problems: one concerns the shortage and the other is relative to the labour «retention». This context doesn’t stop at the economic borders. It affects the education system too, several firms, some government levels in addition to the development and employability organizations. This is to say that we should be awake about this problem because our generation is going to play a important role in order to solve it: we are the next employees. Our parents are also concerned because they are the one to leave, to give their places to us. So, it touches our family more than what we are thinking to. We must act soon to insure the future of our society.

Although some solutions have been showed in the video, many others are now studying by experts in order to use them as soon as possible. These issues consist of new way of teaching, new measures to keep people in their respective job, new and better work conditions and new immigration programs. Our society should put the shoulder to the wheel to restore the situation. The different education institutions must be informed about the labour market’s needs relatively to the workers formation. Companies have to introduce some pre-retirement system (also called progressive retirement) to keep their experienced employees a little bit longer and to allow a certain knowledge transmission between them and the new generation, us. To stop the present exodus, from regions to big centers, local firms must provide excellent work conditions, a good quality of life and a competitive salary. We should not forget immigration, which brings new employees year after year. However, these new arrivals have to be attracted not only by cities as Montreal, but also by some little places where labour shortage represents also a problem, possibly a bigger one.

Bonjour,

Beau travail!
Pour le premier paragraphe, je vous signale en rouge les problèmes à résoudre.
Pour les trois premiers problèmes, je vous suggère aussi une piste pour améliorer le texte. Ensuite ce sera à vous de jouer

Labour shortage

That [The shortage of labour is a] national topical subject [subject of debate which] concerns our generation as much as [il ne s'agit pas ici de quantité comptable => as well as] the one of our parents and the next one.

Because we will have to choose our career soon, to [sauf s'il s'agit d'un discours, il faut lier plus simplement par "and"] orient ourselves in a specific labour market [ + area], we should keep abreast of [= anticipate ?] these [lesquels? "these = ces" oblige à les préciser. Utilisez plutôt le possessif "ses" ] future requests.

By the time being, the situation is already problematic: many sectors feel the effects of that shortage. Under these circumstances are hid [hidden] two major problems: one concerns the shortage and the other is relative to the labour «retention». This context doesn't stop at the economic borders. It affects the education system too [style parlé, choisir un autre "aussi" et bien le placer] several firms, some government levels, in addition to the [lier plus simplement] development and employability organizations.

This is to say that we should be awake about [faux sens, => "be aware of"?] this problem because our generation is going to ["va avoir à = devra" requiert un modal exprimant la contrainte] play an important role in order to solve it: we are the next employees. Our parents are also concerned because they are the ones to leave, to give their places to us [mal dit]. So, it touches ["affecter" existe aussi en anglais] our family more than what we are thinking to [pas le bon temps et pas besoin de préposition]. We must act soon to insure [voyez de plus près le dictionnaire] the future of our society.

Hi! I check my text and I make some corrections. This is better? What can I improve?

P.S. I was not able to change the expression "Derrière ces circonstances se cachent".

The labour shortage is a national subject of debate which concerns our generation as well as the one of our parents and the next one. Because we will have to choose our career soon and to orient ourselves in a specific labour market area, we should keep abreast of its future requests. By the time being, the situation is already problematic: many sectors feel the effects of this shortage. Under these circumstances are hidden two major problems: one concerns the shortage and the other is relative to the labour «retention». This context doesn’t limit itself to the economic borders. It affects also the education system, several firms, some government levels in addition to the development and employability organizations. This is to say that we should be aware of this problem because our generation would play an important role in order to solve it: we are the future employees. Our parents are also concerned because they are the ones to leave, to give their places to us. So, it affects our family more than what we have thought. We must act soon to assure the future of our society.

Well done!

"Under these circumstances" is OK (as is), but "Under" doesn't mean "behind".
The expression you need is something like :"Behind these circumstances lie two major problems:"

"doesn't limit itself" => "isn't limited to"

Now for the second paragraph...

Although some solutions have been showed [proposed] in the video, many others [except when it means "other people", other is used as an adjective and has no plural form] are now studying [being considered] by experts in order to use [use a better verb: "mettre en pratique/appliquer> "them as soon as possible. These issues consist of new way of teaching, new measures to keep people in their respective job [+ position], new and better work conditions and new immigration programs.

Our society should put the shoulder to the wheel to restore the situation. The different education[al] institutions must be informed about the labour market's needs relatively to the workers formation [faux ami! Translate into English]. Companies have to introduce some pre-retirement system (also called progressive retirement) to keep their experienced employees a little bit longer and to allow a certain knowledge transmission between them and the new generation [(which means] us). To stop the present [regional] exodus, from regions to big centers, local firms must provide excellent work conditions, a good quality of life and a competitive salary. We should not forget immigration, which brings new employees year after year. However, these new arrivals have to be attracted not only by cities as Montreal, but also by some little places where labour shortage represents also a problem, possibly a bigger one.

Although some solutions have been showed in the video, many others [except when it means "other people", other is used as an adjective and has no plural form] ["others" is correct - sorry to contradict you, prescott!] are now studying [you want a passive, so..?] by experts in order to use them as soon as possible. These issues consist of new way of teaching [either "A new way of teaching" or "new wayS of teaching"], new measures to keep people in their respective job [While French would use a singular here, English requires the plural as each person has a job and so there are multiple jobs] , new and better working conditions and new immigration programmes [at least, this is the spelling in BrEng].

Our society should put the shoulder to the wheel [I've never heard this expression, but a Google search tells me that it does exist. If you want to use it, you'll have to change the "the" to "its" and make "shoulder" plural (for the same reason as above, English prefers a plural). Alternatively, you could change it to a more common expression such as "Our society should (or "will have to") work its fingers to the bone to.."] to restore the situation. The different educational institutions must be informed about the labour market's needs relatively to the (article isn't necessary) workers formation ("faux ami", as prescott pointed out). Companies have to ("have to" or "should" or "will have to"?) introduce some pre-retirement system (also called progressive retirement) to keep their experienced employees a little bit longer and to allow a certain knowledge transmission between them and the new generation, that is to say, us. To stop the present exodus, from regions to big centers (wrong if it's BrEng), local firms must provide excellent working conditions, a good quality of life and a competitive salary. We should not forget immigration, which brings new employees year after year. However, these new arrivals have to be attracted not only by cities as ("such as" or "like", but not just "as") Montreal, but also by some little places where labour shortage represents also (position of adjective) a problem, possibly a bigger one.

Overall, it's quite a nicely written text, fairly stylish and easy to follow - well done!

If you repost it all, corrected, I'll take a look again and iron out any remaining infelicities.

Oh dear, thank you saron_d for finding my mistake. You are perfectly right, "others" was not used here as an adjective but as a pronoun, meaning "other ones".

First of all, thank you for your help. I corrected my mistakes.

By the time being, the situation is already problematic: many sectors feel the effects of this shortage. Although some solutions have been proposed in the video, many others are now being considered by experts in order to apply them as soon as possible. These issues consist of new ways of teaching, new measures to keep people in their respective jobs position, new and better working conditions and new immigration programs. Our society should (or "will have to") work its fingers to the bone to restore the situation. The different educational institutions must be informed about the labour market needs relative to workers training. Companies have to introduce some pre-retirement system (also called progressive retirement) to keep their experienced employees a little bit longer and to allow a certain knowledge transmission between them and the new generation, that is to say us. To stop the present regional exodus, local firms must provide excellent working conditions, a good quality of life and a competitive salary. We should not forget immigration, which brings new employees year after year. However, these new arrivals have to be attracted not only by cities such as Montreal, but also by some little places where labour shortage also represents a problem, possibly a bigger one.

Hi! First of all, thank you for your help with my text. However, I really need another time your help. I have to write questions and answers about the same subject. Could you help me to correct my mistakes please?

LABOUR SHORTAGE

1. Why can the professional and technical careers valorisation be an effective solution to the labour shortage?

By showing the interesting side of these jobs, authorities inform people about some unknown careers which are the most concerned with labour shortage. They attract people through these market sectors to fill the several vacant jobs.

2. Which actors (minimum of two) take part of the present labour’s solution?

• Educational institutions
• Firms
• Federal and provincial government levels
• Development and employability organisations

3. Identify the principal market sectors (minimum of three) which will be affected by this shortage during the next five years.

• Firms in the construction
• Manufacturing sector
• Primary sector
• Transportation and communication services
• Agriculture

4. Named and explain one major cause of the labour shortage.

• Massive baby boomers retirement: The new generation, which is going to stand in for them, is not necessary trained in the right sector and contains fewer individuals.

• Big centers attraction: Because these big cities offer a lot more interesting divertissements and bigger salaries, people are attempted to move there, what provoke a regional exodus where jobs stay unfilled.

• The unvalorisation of professional and technical careers: Because these jobs are unvalorised, people are not tempted to study in. Then, there are less trained workers available to fill this kind of jobs.

• Formation provided by educational institutions does not appropriately meet the firms’ needs (standards): Because of that fact, unless there are workers available to fill a job, they don’t have the right skills. Then, the labour market’s needs are not filled and the shortage remains significant.

5. Do you think that a higher unemployment rate can counter the labour shortage? Why?

No, this is not a properly issue to solve this problem because the unemployed workers do not necessary have the right skills to meet the market’s demands relatively to the problematic sectors.

6. How can we encourage young people (the ones under thirty) to establish themselves in regions in order to work there?

By providing:

• An exceptional quality of life
• Some good working conditions
• A competitive salary
• Interesting educational programs to attract young people there
• Easiness services access

7. Which impacts could possibly have labour shortage for small companies?

This labour shortage will bring some unfilled jobs which can mean, for a small business, a poorer standard of service, unfilled orders, losing clients or not developing new products.

8. a) Named the two more valued qualities by employers.

• Willingness to learn
• Willingness to stay at the firm

b) Why are these qualities so important for employers?

Unless employees don’t have the right skills to work in their firm, they are disposed to learn and to train themselves in order to improve. So, after a certain among of time, they will be trained especially for their jobs and they will be more productive or efficient.

9. Which are both factors that influence the experience level requests by companies?

The nature and the complexity of the activity performed are the two principal factors. Therefore, the level of experience required depends a great deal on the industry.

10. Which are the labour shortage’s possible consequences (minimum of two)?

• The companies’ production would be lower because of the lack of employees.
• Some businesses are going to close their doors because they will not be profitable (because of higher salaries pay to the employees in order to keep them and sales drop)
• To attract employees, companies would have to raise their offered salaries, what is going to affect the price of their services or products. Then, they would not be as competitive as they were in the labour market.
