..............Now, enjoy yourselves ! . It is almost as easy as pie, isn't it ?

Correction prévue vers le samedi 18 Juin

Hello dear Violet,

Thanks a lot for this new ," highly inspired"topic.

Priest's words.

1) Father Logan heard the German refugee saying:"I really must speak to someone.
2)he definitely can't tell what the man confessed him.
3)On that Wednesday, the lawyer's door was opened, even though he usually double-locked it.
4)How lucky we are , having a well-able workman.
5) What such an inanity it was to think a priest might be involved in a murder!
6)I must see you immediatly, wherever you want.
7)I am unable to help you; what do you want me to tell you?
8),Please, don't complain!I won't bore you anymore
9)So, why did anybody blackmailed you?--nothing compelled you to answer.
10)I have seen neither Mickaël nor Villette for five years.
11)No worry! Mickaël would settle all that.
12)The police set out Villette had been murdered at half past twenty-three .
13)It's you who'll be hung instead of me.(in my position; in my place)
14)Were you still in love with him when you got married ?
15)If you can't keep your head, you may be able to afford to do a murder.
16)The cassock wasn't his own;the weapon wasn't found again,so he was acquitted.
17)The woman was knocked down by her husband's gunshot in the middle of the crowd.
18)Her last words were "forgive me !".Then she died in the priest's arms.
19)Detective Larrue shouted:"I want the murderer not to be killed!"
20)To kill you would be to do you a favor!you are as guilty as I am!
That long exercice has very nearly killed me! ...but I have survived.

Hello violet !

1 ) Father Logan heard the German refugee saying :-"I must definitely talk to someone !".
2 ) He will never reveal what the man confessed to him.
3 ) That Wednesday, the lawyer's door was open, whereas he usually locked it tightly.
4 ) How lucky we are to have such a good worker !
5 ) It's absurd to think a priest could have been involved in a murder !
6 ) I must see you urgently, wherever !
7 ) I can't help you; what do you want me to tell you ?
8 ) Don't pity me ! I won't bother you again !
9 ) Why have you been blackmailed, then ? - You don't have to tell me.
10 ) I hadn't seen Michael or Villette for five years.
11 ) Don't worry. Michael would sort everything out.
12 ) The police proved that Villette had been killed at half past eleven at night.
13 ) It's you that will be hanged, not me !
14 ) At the time of your wedding, were you still in love with him ?
15 ) If you can't control your emotions, you may end up committing murder.
16 ) The cassock wasn't his; the weapon was never found; so he was acquitted
17 ) In the middle of the crowd, the man shot his wife with a pistol.
18 ) Her last words were : "Forgive me !". Then she died in the priest's arms.
19 ) Inspector Larrue shouted : I don't want the murderer to be killed.
20 ) Killing you, would do you a favor ! You're just as guilty as I am.

Merci beaucoup !...

Bong ! They just wouldn't care about my allergies , you know !!!
.....................................................................................................

1 )Word or the word of a priest : la parole donnée.

2 ) A priest [pr st] Un prêtre.

---The clergy/ a clergyman (écclésiastique)/the Pope - the papacy Ooo / a bishop (cf. celui de Bayeux, procès de Caen : 14/15 Sept.2001) / an archbishop (comme celui de Canterbury (1120 ?) Becoming a Refugee By Deng Duot

Dimma Refugee Camp
June 2004

The actual moment,
Of Exile,
Is like an illness.
You are ill,
With rage.

To each family,
It means closing the door,
On friends, culture, your native country.

One year is an exile,
Compared to ten years.

Ten years,
Means nothing,
In the history of the country.

But for a human being,
Is a long time.
For a child,
A life time.
Some of us,
We're born in Ethiopian camps.

Peace is 'round the corner,
What I call home,
Will still be,
Another exile.
Because,
I don't know home.

What an irony,
To become a refugee.

[14-year-old Deng Duot, a Sudanese refugee, presented this poem
during the 2004 World Refugee Day commemorations in Ethiopia.]

....So, therefore, donc,as a result, avant de 'flying off the handle (lâcher le guidon = get crazy), going up the wall, , yes, np, before losing my self-control and good temper , I'd better (aux. modal : je ferais mieux de...- on les reverra demain!)close here for tonight then do some yoga ! .

--Epistemic modality (knowledge)- He must be starving !(very, very highly probable , very little doubt)

---Deontic modality ( possibility/ necessity)- You must leave immediately, your train is about to start !(no choice; no more train)

---Ambiguous : You must speak English now.

Donc, ariane and friends, reprenons avec les pourcentages :

-- Certitude : He is guilty. --100%.

---Forte probabilité : He must be guilty -- 90/95%

---Vraisemblance : He should not be guilty.-- 60%/70%

---Possibilité : He can be guilty or not.-- 50%

---Possibilité envisagée si..: He could be guilty.-- 40%

---Eventualité : He may be guilty.--30%

--- Très peu de risques: He might be guilty --.5%/10%

---Certitude du contraire : He is not guilty. 0%

--I can swim (100%, connaissance), but I am not able to swim across the Channel.(capacité particulière)

-- You must obey the rules , Violet !-- All right ! I shall obey them, then !(Je le ferai puisque tu le veux)
---I must correct properly ! (ordre moral, duty)# I have to .. (obligation): il me faut ... maintenant que j'ai commencé !
--- I have got to convince you : il me faut expressément vous faire comprendre les modaux!

--You must wash my car, gerondif, you like it or not !(you love cars, don't you?)/( Two hours later) by the way, dear gerondif, you needn't wash my car ! I've done it at the(petrol) station!

--- You should never lose your temper. (conseil)
---1. Used to indicate obligation or duty: You ought to work harder than that.
2. Used to indicate advisability or prudence: You ought to wear a raincoat.
3. Used to indicate desirability: You ought to have been there; it was great fun.
4. Used to indicate probability or likelihood: She ought to finish by next week.
A remarquer qu'on n'emploie plus beaucoup (litote) 'ought to ' : should tend à le remplacer !...

Vous suivez toujours ? Bouh!...

L'interdiction : you mustn't smoke in the baby's bedroom ! Oh! Non !
--You can't park your car here, the policeman said (two lines along the road, next to the pavement)(transmission d'ordre, décret).
Permission : Can I open this window ? est moins maniéré ou tenu que ' May I ..? (puis-je ..?) Retour à l'interdiction : - No, you can't / No, you mustn't! (not to be allowed, permitted to).

-- I will (je le veux ; he will marry Kate (he vowed).

--I had better ( I'd better) stop soon. (je ferais mieux de ...)

-- Would you like to finish or carry on explaining ?-- I would rather go to bed. ( I'd rather...)Je préfèrerais (de beaucoup!...)

...and that is what I am going to do, straight away , before going nuts or talking nonsense (if not, both).

See you tomorrow, when I can .
Have a good soothing night , friends.

7 ) Propositions infinitives :

a) ph.1 - modèle : I make you work. (inf sans to) / verbes de perception( sans signe particulier de processus ; merci gerondif) : hear + cod + inf .sans to / see, feel, taste ( I can taste these sweets become fizzy after a few seconds )/ smell . ' Father Logan heard the refugee ['rfju:'i:] say .

--' I must confess to you. I must tell someone / I want to make a confession/ ...

--si : I saw the man walking (part.présent) across the playground : j'ai vu qu'il avait une drôle de manière de marcher : cela m'a attiré l'oeil.

b ) modèle I want you to..: inf. complet ph.7 et 19. .
Verbes de volonté (I'd like you to ...est tellement plus poli...)/ d'attente avec espoir : I expect you to..
' What do you want me to say ? / What do you expect me to say ( qu'attendez-vous de moi?)

- I want the murderer( to be caught, arrested)alive = not to be shot dead/ killed

8 )Forme exclamative: Pas d'inversion (interrogative ):

- What nonsense it was / How stupid it was !
- How lucky we are !

Réfléchissez- bien donc ! How silly you can be ! # How silly can you be ?

1 ) Father Logan heard the German refugee say : ' I must tell someone.'

2 ) He definitely cannot let out what the man confessed to him.

3 ) The lawyer's door was open on that Wednesday, whereas it was usually double-locked.

Juriste / avocat (ce qu'est Villette), coroner(US), advocate, attorney(US), barrister, pleader [pld] comme 'Les Plaideurs 'de Jean Racine dont je ne me souviens guère que de :
- " Je vais parler, je parle, j'ai parlé!" (shame on me ! C'était en 5ème! (second year))

4 ) How lucky we are to have such a skilled workman !

Skilled, skillful : talentueux,très adroit/ a workman or a worker, camarade !

5 ) What nonsense to think (that) a priest could be involved in a murder !

Lien internet

/ to think : péremptoire (l'autre n'a guère son mot à dire : 95% assurance de soi et d'avoir raison/ involved or implicated in : préférez ce qui ne ressemble pas au Français .

6 ) I've got to see you urgently, whatever the place is.

7 ) There is no way I can ( I cannot help you at all) help you ; what do you expect me to say ?

Pas moyen, en aucune façon = by no means, not at all/ I can : recouvre les deux nuances : je suis incapable (de délation)) de ..et je n'en ai pas le droit : ambiguÏté intéressante pour le spectateur / to say : en qqs mots. On pourrait admettre ' to tell you' si un récit suivait.

8 ) Don't feel sorry for me ! I shall not bother you anymore.

shall not (won't , teinté de la volonté de l'autre)~~must = ordre (à toutes les personnes et pas de contraction)= ' You shall not kill ': 'Tu ne tueras point' (c'est Moi, Dieu, qui te le dis)

9 ) Why were you blackmailed, then ? - You don't need to answer if you don't want to.

Voix passive au past (révolu )(Villette est mort depuis); blackmail :' courrier noir' = comme 'le corbeau' : chantage/ )./ I have 'pinched' (piqué= slang)the following bit from Lucile : c'était trop bien ! (you don't have to : non obligation/ you can keep silent : c'est un droit, l'avocat le fera).

10 ) I saw neither Michael nor Villette for five years.
Preterite: passé révolu : la dernière fois que....

11 ) Not to worry ! Michael would sort everything out .

To sort out = to solve . Démêler, débrouiller et résoudre.

12 ) You are the one who is going to be hanged in my stead !

You pouvait se suffire , en emphase.Be going to : futur proche, menace visible / To be hanged : pendu avec la corde autour du cou et en mourir # to be hung : être accroché qqe part par où vous voudrez : ne pas en mourir pour autant./In my stead [std], instead of me.

13 ) The police have established (that) Villette was murdered at eleven thirty PM .

14 ) Were you still in love with him when you got married ?

Le problème est là pour Ruth : elle aimait Logan(him) avant qu'il ne parte à la guerre et l'aime sûrement toujours/ à partir de son changement de statut : marriage : at the time of your wedding (impliquerait qu'elle n'a plus de sentiment pour Michael dès le jour de ses noces)

15 ) If you are capable of losing your self-control, then you are capable of murdering someone.

50%. To lose one's self -control ,one's temper , to grow into a fury .

--- Rappelez-vous : . Il voit rouge !...
Lien internet
. Woops ! La 3ème photo est un montage, of course !

To lose one's head , to go crazy = to go head over the heels (talons): perdre la tête (amour obsession,colère...)/ to lose one's mind , to go crazy, nuts, fly off the handles : perdre la raison (si c'est comme chez Aragon, tant mieux!

Lien internet

16 ) The cassock appeared not to be his own, the weapon was never found : he was therefore acquitted.
Se révéla ne pas être, s'avéra../ therefore,as a conclusion,as a result , hence,thence,thus.

17 ) The husband shot his wife dead amidst the crowd.

--Amidst : plus tenu que 'in the middle of.' Je voulais juste me faire plaisir !...

18 ) Her last words were ' forgive me 'and then she died in the priest's arms.

19 ) Inspector Larrue shouted : ' I want the murderer alive !'

20 ) Killing you would be doing you a favour ! You are as guilty as I am !

To do a favour (favor), to do a good turn : rendre service ./ as I am : prop. sub. conjonctive avec sujet et verbe , en équilibre (correct et 'tenu') avec :
Sorry , mais je considère ' as me' comme rather colloquial .Comme à la question ' Who(sujet) is coming with me ? -Me(complément ??) !!

Woilà, what?'
Woilà what ?

...and now, let me wish you a good soothing night ! See you tomorrow, no doubt. Yours.

Il fait donc entre 90° et 100° ...F ( Fahrenheit, mind you!) à Paris !..

After an umteenth(umpteenth, umptieth = énième) shower à défaut de baignade ,je vous remercie d'être venus visiter cet exercice ou/et d'avoir fidèlement élaboré de fines phrases
