Present simple/mistake

Good evening,
I will try to explain my problem in English but please correct me if I make a mistake.
I have read a tale book and I saw this sentence:
“In the morning the men go fishing while the women took care of the meals and smoked the fish.”
Whywe don’t say didn't they write?:
“In the morning the men go fishing while the women take care of the meals and smoke the fish”.
I think here they should have used the present simple because the men go fishing every day in the morning while the women take care of the meals and smoke the fish.
It is the same thing that they make every day; it is an action that recurs every day. Even if it is a tale, I think that they should have used the present simple.
If what I say is wrong please tell me whywe don’t rather they shouldn't have used the “present simple” here.
Thanks for all your answers.

Hello tsape,
It depends on the context of the book.
If the book is written in the present simple the sentence should read:
In the morning the men go fishing while the women take care of the meals and smoke the fish.
If the book is written in the past simple the sentence should read:
In the morning the men went fishing while the women took care of the meals and smoked the fish.
On pourrait aussi utiliser la tournure avec 'used to/would' mais ne compliquons pas les choses.
Il faut déjà voir si c'est une vraie faute ou une faute de frappe, une coquille.
