1)I had a trouble, reading this book.
2)Doing my work, I had a trouble.
3)I had a trouble, starting my car.

I think the question deals with the gerund construction.
To me, all are correct if you remove the comma in the first and third sentences.

The problem has nothing to do with gerunds. It's a question of noncountable nouns.

3) I had trouble starting my car.
