Hello
Ihave heard and read the sentence in the subtitles in the great Woody Allen's movie "Match Point" yesterday evening.
All the actors seem to speak with a nice English accent, except North American Scarlett Johansson. Rather fast dialogs most of the time, but a bit less than usually in all the Allen's films.
Why that ending "'s" please in "I am a friend of Nola's" ?
I suppose it is a classical question already treated on the forum, sorry.
Could you give me a link or a short answer please ?
Thank you
It is at the end of the film. A terrible end... An amazing film

Hello,
I am a friend of Nola's means that I am one friend among all Nola's friends. It is useless to repeat the word 'friends' and 's is enough.
Hope it helps.

Et quoi répondre à "That horrible nose of Suzan's." >> That horrible nose among Suzan's noses ?

Hello
BBC Learning English:
The possessive form is used in a prepositional phrase beginning with 'of'
'Maggie, a colleague of Mary's, came to the opening of the exhibition. Rufus came too.' 'Who's Rufus?' 'He's a friend of my husband's.'

Have a nice day

Hello.
"That horrible nose of Suzan's."
This option is not completely logical but is allowed because the others are insufficient to convey all the nuances.
"...of Suzan" doesn't sufficiently convey the idea of possession. (It is her nose, not simply the nose of her.)
"Suzan's horribe nose" lacks the distancing effect of "that".
"That Suzan's horrible nose" applies the distancing effect of "that" to Suzan, not to her nose.
"That horrible Suzan's nose" implies that Suzan is horrible!
See you.
