Hello Everyone,
I would like to know more about the use of "of" to express possession or relation between two nouns.
For example, do I have to say "Champion of the world" or "World champion" or both are correct?

in this case, both are correct but world champion is more common today. Notice that in the second case world is an adjective I think. That's the reason why it is possible to interchange in my viewpoint.

Thank for your help, but "world" is a noun. World-wide is an adjective.
Whatever, I would like to know when we have to use "of" between two nouns and when we don't have to. Other examples: the ship captain or the captain of the ship? the association chairman or the chairman of the association? and so on...

"Champion of the world" or "World champion" are both correct.
"Champion of the world" uses the possessive case
"World champion" is a compound word (two nouns here)

No, it doesn't always work.
Compound words are an association of elements, but not a possession.
