Exercice 19/Encore varié
Message de here4u posté le 28-10-2014 à 00:08:20 (S | E | F)
Hello all of you !

Here's the future exercise you're asking for !

- The first four sentences are a simple translation from French into English !
- Then in five sentences you will have to rewrite the sentences, keeping the same meaning, and using modals.
- Finally, you'll have to re-order words, so that they make meaningful sentences.(no word is missing and all of them must be used !)I know that most of you are fans ... and I know that one or two don't like it ! You may skip these sentences if they get on your nerves too much !

This is a exercise ! The collective correction will be given on the 8th of November. You may change your tries till the 5th at night.

5) Rewrite using modals : (pay attention to the tenses used.)
a) Perhaps something has happened to the postman, he didn't turn up.
b) It wasn't possible for us to send him back to England.
c) No attempt to contact him ! Understood ?
d) Perhaps he didn't know you were supposed to go back with him.
e) As far as your return journey is concerned, no need to hurry.

6)Re-order the words ... Have fun !
a) OFTEN/ENOUGH/MORE/LESS/HE/HER/SHE/HIM/THE/THE/CAN/STAND/STRANGELY/FLATTERS/,/./
b) HE/HE/HIS/HAS/'s/IS/AS/BIRTHDAY/WIFE/THOUGHTFUL/FORGOTTEN /, /./
c) SHE/SHE/SHE/DID/DID/DO/SAY/NOT/WHAT/TO/WANTED /,/ ?/
d) HE/HE/HE/THE/NO/IN/HIS/HIS/HAD/HAD/SOONER/THAN/LIFE/MISTAKE/BIGGEST/ PAPERS/KNEW/MADE/GIVEN/, /./

Good luck !

Hello Here4u.
Thank you very much for the correction N° 18.
This is my try:

1) The coach can either take his player's side and question the referee's decision or talk him into redoing his exercise.
2) In France,English and Chinese are more and more studied in secondary school, but fewer and fewer pupils choose dead languages.
3) She has made him believe that her bracelet has been stolen! In fact, she has left it pawnshop!
4) If they were richer they would have a house built. However, as they have great trouble making ends meet, they are going either to build their house (by their own) themselves, or to remain tenant where they stay (live ) since 5 years!

5a) Something may have happened to the postman, he didn't come yet.
5b) We couldn't send him back to England!
We were not able to send him back to England!
5c) You must not contact him! Got it ?
5d) Perhaps he didn't know you might go back with him.
5e) As far as your return journey is concerned, you don't have to hurry.

6a) Strangely the less often he flatters her, the more enough she can stand him.
6b) As he has forgotten his wife's birthday, he is thoughtful.
6c) Did she say, she did not do what she wanted to?
6d) No sooner than had he given his papers, he knew he had made the biggest mistake in his life.

Wish you a sunny W.E

Hello Here4u
I'm fond of variety
Just one question to help us : is 6b) ironical (why not end the sentence with "..." instead of "." ?) or isn't the word "NOT" missing ?
And another question : is a comma really necessary in 6d ?

I'll try this :

1 The coach can either take sides with his player (or : take his player's side) and discuss the umpire's decision, or convince his player into serving again (or : or talk his player into replaying the point)
2 In France, English and Chinese are more and more studied in high school, but fewer and fewer students choose ancient languages.
3 She made him believe she had had her bracelet stolen ! In fact, she left it at her aunt's.
4 If they were richer, they would have their house built. However, since they are struggling to make ends meet, they're either going to build their house themselves, or remain a tenant where they have lived for five years !
5a Something may have happened to the postman since he didn't turn up.
5b We couldn't send him back to England.
5c You mustn't attempt to contact him ! Understood ?
5d He might not have known (or : he might have been unaware) (that) you were supposed to go back with him.
5e You won't need to hurry as far as your return journey is concerned.

6a : STRANGELY ENOUGH, THE MORE OFTEN HE FLATTERS HER, THE LESS SHE CAN STAND HIM.
6b : THOUGHTFUL AS HE IS, HE HAS FORGOTTEN HIS WIFE'S BIRTHDAY...
6c : SHE DID SAY WHAT SHE WANTED TO DO, DID NOT SHE ?
6d : NO SOONER HAD HE GIVEN HIS PAPERS, THAN HE KNEW HE HAD MADE THE BIGGEST MISTAKE IN HIS LIFE.

5) Rewrite using modals : (pay attention to the tenses used.)

Hello !
A few more hours to change what you have written and a few more days to post if you want to ... ;

You're GREAT !

In France, English and Chinese are more and more studied in secondary school, but fewer and fewer students choose the dead languages.

She made him believe she had had her bracelet stolen! Actually, she pawned it!

If they had more money, they would have their house built. However, having difficulty making ends meet, they're going either to build it on their own, or to keep renting the place where they've been living for five years.

5) Rewrite using modals :
a) Something may have happened to the postman, as he didn't turn up.
b) We couldn't send him back to England.
c) You mustn't contact him ! Understood ?
d) He may not have known you were supposed to go back with him.
e) As far as your return journey is concerned, you needn't hurry.

It's really late for me as I'm used to sleeping at this time! That can explain my skipping!

Have a good night, dear Here4u!
-------------------------------------------------------
Now both wide awake and racked by remorse, I've decided to finish my work... (hoping it's not too late and begging your pardon asking for forgiveness !)

So, here it is :

6a) Strangely enough, the more he flatters her, the less she can stand him.

6b) Thoughtful as he is, he has forgotten his wife's birthday.

6c) She did say what she wanted to do, did not she?

6d) No sooner had he given his papers than he knew he had made the biggest mistake in his life.

Thank you again for this exercise, here4u.

Hello !

Hello

1) The coach can either side with his player and discuss the call with the referee, or persuade his player to serve again!
2) In France, more and more students are studying English and Chinese in high school and fewer and fewer students are choosing the classics....
3) She would have him believe her bracelet had been stolen! In fact, she pawned it!
4) If they were richer, they would have a house built for them. However, since they have a hard time making ends meet, they will either build their house themselves or stay in the house they've been renting for the last five years.

Merci.

Hello !

I'm really no good at making computers and tabs obey me ... Anyway : Here are my suggestions and explanations !

The coach can either side with his player and question the umpire’s decision, or talk his player into serving again !
You’ve given me : ‘referee’ and ‘umpire’ … They depend on the sports you’re thinking about ! I was thinking of tennis, (because of the serve !) and tennis has both an umpire and a referee …
Lien internet

In France, English and Chinese are more and more studied in High Schools, but fewer and fewer students choose Ancient languages !
Let’s try not to hurt Latin and Greek Lovers, calling these languages ‘dead’ … They’re NOT ! (just ‘Ancient’, which is much more noble !)

She /let/made him believe that she had had her bracelet stolen. In fact, she had put it ‘at my uncle’s’/ left it in a pawnshop.
C’est ‘at my uncle’s’ !!!(Bravo Lucile !

If they were richer/ Were they whealthier, they’d have a house built. Yet, as they’re struggling to make ends meet, they’re either going to build it themselves/for themselves/ on their own, or remain tenants (or go on renting ) the place they’ve been renting/living in for 5 years.
Here, of course, you had to take care of the tenses … and of the sequence of tenses in an ‘if clause’; I also wanted to check ‘to make ends meet’, and the pronoun ‘themselves’; May I remind you that ‘the owner’ (or landlord/landlady) lets a house and that the tenants rent the house, paying the ‘rent’.

5) Rewrite using modals : (pay attention to the tenses used. )
a) Perhaps something has happened to the postman, he didn't turn up.
Something may have happened to the postman, he didn’t turn up ! (‘perhaps’ = éventualité)
b) It wasn't possible for us to send him back to England.
We couldn’t send him back to England. (Impossibilité passée)
c) No attempt to contact him! Understood ?
You mustn’t contact him ! Understood ! ( = Interdiction.)
d) Perhaps he didn't know you were supposed to go back with him.
He may not have known you were supposed to go back with him . (Eventualité passée)
e) As far as your return journey is concerned, no need to hurry.
As far as your return journey is concerned, you needn’t worry/you don’t have to worry/ you don’t need to worry ! (= Absence d’obligation . Here, the 3 forms were possible as we’re in the present !)

6)a)OFTEN/ENOUGH/MORE/LESS/HE/HER/SHE/HIM/THE/THE/CAN/STAND/STRANGELY/
FLATTERS/
Stangely enough, the more often he flatters her, the less she can stand him.(or the opposite concerning the persons !)

b) HE/HE/HIS/HAS/'s/IS/HAS/BIRTHDAY/WIFE/THOUGHTFUL/FORGOTTEN /, /./
Thoughtful as he is, he has forgotten his wife’s birthday.
‘Thoughtful as he is ….’

c) SHE/SHE/SHE/DID/DID/DO/SAY/NOT/WHAT/TO/WANTED /,/ ?/
She did not say what she wanted to do, did she?
You needed a question tag. It could also be ‘she did say what she wanted to do, didn’t she?’ je préfère la première parce que l’autre avait besoin d’une contraction – que je n’avais pas mise !…

d) HE/HE/HE/THE/NO/IN/HIS/HIS/HAD/HAD/SOONER/THAN/LIFE/MISTAKE/BIGGEST/ PAPERS/KNEW/MADE/GIVEN/, /./
No sooner had he given his papers, than he knew he had made the biggest mistake in his life.
(After all the negatives and semi negatives, starting a sentence, you MUST put the verb before the subject .)”No sooner + inversion du sujet , than/when ….”

Sorry again for turning your brains into Rubik's cubes ! (Not sorry at all, in fact ! ) I hope you enjoyed it !
