Bonsoir
Exercice 24 : Allez ! On cherche !
1) Translate into English:

Hello !
I' m on my tablet ... No authorized smileys ...
I'm quite surprised not to have any try ... Does that mean that it's too difficult ( you don' t have to do it entirely) or that you need more time ( just say it) ...OR that you're shopping for Xmas ! Have a good shopping spree!

Hello here4u.
I apologize for being absent from the last execise but I was too busy last week.
Thank you so much for this tricky exercise(it took more than 3 whole days) .
I) Translate into English:
a- Can you imagine a Ferrari or even automatic transmission Mercedes? As far as I am concerned(For me)they should be my parents'pedal cars without any intersts.
b- The more we were going near our destination, the fewer pedestrians there were and the less vitality there was and the more I was afraid to spend some very boring days!
c- Her hair is going grey ( or She is becoming greyhaired);she is going to have it dyed but she will be undecided to choose if she is dyed dark or blond.
d- "Why do you take so much bagage?Who will carry them?""It's me who will make them wheel! We must keep up whith the times!".(or perhaps:It will be me who make them wheel).
e- He will be grateful to everyone who will give him one's advise about(on)this vexed(tricky)point! Do you want to help him or not?
Why stay in bed when not to be(not being)asleep? Why then not attend to one's business without disturbing the household and neighbourgs?Who has never known,at least once in his life, the trials of a sleepless night?
It's late, you are falling asleep(you can't keep your eys open)and you are in bed for more than half an hour at least...No need of reason or particular upsets, the fact is there, you can't sleep a wink!Weary of keeping tossing and turning, you get up at last, try your miracle cure(everybody has got one!):either tisane,a tablet, hot milk,a Proust's chapter, and at the end of long minutes, you go back (return)in warm under the duvet...
The following day your pitiless alarm clock will force you having a morning(perhaps a whole day)being on auto pilot.
Or: The following day you will be forced by your pitiless clock to have a morning being on auto pilot.

Hello !
Tea-cosy N°12= a Snowman Tea-cosy N°13= The Union Jack Tea-cosy N°14= A Christmas tree.

Bonjour
1) Translate into English:
a) Can you imagine a Ferrari or even a Mercedes automatic? To me, these would be equivalent to the boring "pedal cars" of my parents.
b) The closer we get to our destination, the fewer the pedestrians and life, and the more I fear having to spend several days in complete and utter boredom.
c) Her hair is beginning to gray. (Zut, alors!) She's going to dye it but can't decide whether to color it brown or blond. (You might try aging gracefully instead. Dyed hair looks so fake, plus the chemicals might seep into your brain and give you alzheimers. Vanity, vanity.)
d) - "Why are you bringing so many pieces of luggage? Who's going to carry them all?" -"Don't worry, they roll! (On account of the wheels!) We've got to roll with the times!"
e) He will be grateful to all those who offer their opinions on this delicate question. Do you want to help him, or not?
Why stay/remain in bed when you can't sleep? Why not attend to your hobbies, without disturbing the household and neighbors ? (In other words, no mowing the lawn, dammit!) Who has not experienced at least once in their life, the torment of a sleepless night? (Seulement mon chien, je crains.) It is late, you go to bed, and you are in bed for half and hour, more or less... no need to fret, the fact is, you can't sleep! You toss and turn, finally getting up to try your "miracle remedy" (everyone has one), be it (Vive le subjonctif anglais) herbal tea, warm milk (beurk), a chapter of Proust (Pauvre Proust) and sitting up for a while, you return to the warmth of your duvet.... The following day, your merciless alarm clock condemns you (don't blame the alarm clock, it's not at fault ) to a day (perhaps an entire day) of functioning as a zombie. (On se beurke ? )

Hello, here4u
here is n°24 thanks for it :
a)Could you fancy a Ferrari, even a Mercedes, with an automatic drive ?For me it would be like the "pedal cars" of my parents,a real nonsense!
b)The nearer we drew from our destination the fewer pedestrians and less life there were and the more fearing I was to be obliged to spend some boring days!
c)Her hair is turning grey; she means to make them dyed but she hesitates between brown and blond tint.
d)Why bring along so many luggages? Who is going to carry them? I will get them rolling ! One must be up-to-date !
e)He will be grateful towards everyone who will give him his advice on this tricky issue! You want to help him or you
don't??
Why stay in bed while we don't sleep? Why then not go about to one's business, taking heed not to disturb the household and the neighbourhood?
Who has never known ,at least once in his life, the agonies of a sleepless night?
It is late, you are very sleepy and you have been laying in bed for at least half an hour.......Due to no reason or a special upset, the fact remains that you can't sleep a wink!
Weary of tossing and turning, you get up at last and you try your "wonder cure" ( everybody has one of his!):either a herbal tea or a tablet,or a little hot milk, or a full chapter of Proust, and after a few long minutes you go back under the braid...........
The day after you will be condemned by your mercyless alarm-clock to spend a morning (or even a day) as a zombie.

Hello Here4u, Hello everybody
a) Can you imagine a Ferrari or even an automatic Mercedes ? For me, it would be like 'pedal cars' of my parents without any interest.
b) The nearer we went to our destination there were the fewer pedestrians and activity and the more I was afraid to spend a very annoying few days.
c) Her hair begin to turn grey; she will make it dye but she hesitates about choosing if it will be dyed in brown or in blond.
d) Why do you take so much luggage ? Who will carry them ? It's I who will make roll them. We must move with the times.
e) He will be grateful to anyone who will give his opinion about this delicate question ! Do you want to help him or not ?
Why stay in bed when not sleeping ?
Why not then go about your business without disturbing the household and neighbours ?
Who hasn't felt at least once in the life the torments of sleepless night ?
It's late, you fall asleep and you are in bed for a half hour at least... No need to have a reason or a particular annoyance, the fact is there, you can't close the eye ! Tired to turn and return around, you get up finally, try your miracle remedy ( everyone has one) : is an herbal tea, a tablet, some hot milk, a chapter of Proust, and after several long minutes you return under the warmth of the quilt.
The next day your heartless alarm clock will oblige you during a morning ( perhaps a whole day) to operate on auto-pilot.

Hello Here4U
I hope it's not too late for the vote
As for me, the most beautiful tea cosy is N°8 with such beautiful flowers (N°11 and N°14 are so charming too !)
The cutest one : the chicken (N°4)
And the quaintest one is definitely the sun-bathing girl (N°10)
1) By far, the most useful exercise ! THANKS A LOT !!!
1a) Can you imagine an automatic Ferrari or even an automatic Mercedes ? As for me, they would be my parents' pedal cars : uninteresting at all! (or : without any interest whatsoever) (or : and absolutely worthless)
1b) The more we were approaching our destination, the fewer pedestrians and the less animation there were, and the more I feared I would (have to) spend a few very dreary days !
1c) Her hair is beginning to go grey (or : is becoming grey) (or : is going grey) ; She's going to have it dyed but she's trying to decide whether she'll have it coloured brown or blonde.
1d) "Why are you taking so much luggage ? Who's going to carry it ?" "I'll be the one who will make it roll ! We have to keep up with the times !"
1e) He'll be thankful to whoever will give him his opinion on this thorny issue. Will you help him or not ?
Why stay in bed when you don't sleep ? Why not go on with your own business without disturbing the household and the neighbours ? Who has never experienced, at least once in his life, the torment of a sleepless night ?
It's very late, you're falling asleep, and you're in bed for more than half an hour, at least...
No need for particular reason or upset, the fact is, you can't close an eye !
Tired of tossing and turning, you finally get up and try your 'magic bullet' (everyone has got one !) : either an herbal tea, a pill, some warm milk or a chapter of Proust, and after a long while, you snuggle back under the warm quilt...
The day after, your pitiless alarm clock will doom you to (spend) a morning (maybe a whole day) on automatic pilot.
2) So interesting (I mean, so difficult) !

Dear here4u,
Here is my try.
1) Translate into English:
Can you imagine an automatic Ferrari or even a Mercedes ? They would be like my fathers’ “pedal cars” , that is they wouldn’t be of any interest to me.
The closer we were approaching to our destination, fewer pedestrians/people and animation we were coming across.
Therefore, I was more and more getting afraid of passing there some annoying days.
Her hair are starting to turn grey/She’s getting to become grey-haired. So, she wants to have them dyed, but she's still hesitating in merit what colour, between brown or blonde would suit her better.
d) 'Pourquoi emportes-tu tant de bagages ? Qui va les porter ?' 'C'est moi qui les ferai rouler ! Il faut vivre avec son temps !
“Why do you take so many luggage? Who will carry them?” “ It’s me who will do the drive! We must move with the times!”
He will be grateful to anyone who will give his opinion about this difficult matter. Are you going to help him or not?
Why stay in bed when not sleeping ? Why not, then, going about our business without disturbing family and neighbours? Who has not experienced, at least once in his life, the torment of a sleepless night?
It’s late, you’re falling asleep and you’re lying in bed at least for more than half an hour….Without any reason or particular trouble, simply said you can’t close eye.
Sick and bored to toss and turn yourself you finally get up and try your personal “miraculous/wonderful cure” (everyone knows/has got one), to say a herbal tea, a tablet, some hot milk, a chapter by Proust, and after several minutes you get back to the warm under your eiderdown.
The following day, your ruthless awaking, will condemn you to act as you were guided/monitored by a radar device.
2) ABACUS:

As shown in the above outline I was able to find nine words: bow, sleeve, idler, land, bul. (abbreviation for bulletin), ace, skimmer and grinder, but a “C” was to be left. Sorry.
3) Insert the letters (or letter groups) so as to form words reading across, answering the clues on the left. A bonus word will read diagonally down.

Very nice of you having increased the level of difficulty.
That's made me feel more motivated and engaged in the job.
I do hope you'll provide to set up soon another ( more) demanding exercise, which
would be Christmas gift for us. Won't you?

wishing you a great week.

Dear here4u
Back to school after a very interesting Indonesian trip. Here is my try without the tricky games. I have still jet lag and I can't spend long time to solve them;... Next time I will be able to do them (Maybe...)
a)Could you imagine a Ferrari or even a Mercedes, both, with an automatic gear box. As far as I am concerned these would be the same as my parents’ pedal car without any interest.
b)The nearer we get to our destination, the fewer pedestrian and life there were and the more I was afraid spending a few particularly boring days.
c)Her hair is starting to be greying/is becoming grey. she is going to have it dyed, however she is still hesitating to choose whether she will have coloured it either brown or blond.
d)Why are you bringing so much luggage? Who is going to carry it? I will make it roll myself . We have got to move with the times.
e)He will be grateful to every person who will suggest him his advice about this tricky question. Will you want to help him or not?
Why remain in bed while we can’t sleep? Why not to attend to your affairs? Without disturbing the household and the neighbours? Who has never known at least once in his life the throes of a sleepless night?
It is late, you are feeling sleepy and you have been lying in bed for more than half and hour, at least,…without no special reason or particularly upset. The fact is quite present, you can’t sleep, you lie awake all night. Weary of tossing and turning, you get up at last and try your miracle remedy (everybody has his own remedy) either a herbal tea, a tablet, some hot milk or a chapter of Proust and after never-ended minutes, you go back in the warmth of the quilt .The day after, your merciless alarm clock will doom/condemn you to a morning may be a whole day of functioning on automatic pilot

As soon as I begin to put my fingers on the keyboard of the organ and play a sonata from Bach the first notes make them heard outside the submarine .And then , I am seeing through the thick porthole a myriad of multicomored fishs moving around , dancing together and saying to me ' have a very nice night Captain' . Shortly after, I am sleeping quietly in the Morpheus' arms .
O marvellous night !
Thanks for this test

Hello Here4U, thanks for having given more time, this is my try, always done with much pleasure
a) Can you imagine a Ferrari or even a Mercedes with an automatic gear change ? For me, it would be like the "pedal cars" of my parents, without any interest !
b) the more we were close to our destination, the less there were pedestrian nor animation, and the more I worried to spend some boring days here !
c) her hair is beginning to be gray, she is going to make them dye, but she doesn't know if she'll choose a brown color or a blond one,
d) why are you bringing so much bags ? Who is going to carry them ? It's me who will make rolling them, we must keep up with the times !
e) he will be grateful toward any people who will accept to give their opinion about this thorny question ! do you accept to help him or not ?
Why staying in bed when we can't sleep ? Why not then going about its business without disturbing the household and neighbors? Who has not experienced, at least once in his life, the throes of a sleepless night?
It is late, you are falling asleep, and you are in bed for more of thirty minutes, at least...no need to have a particular reason, or to feel annoyed, the truth is you didn't get a wink of sleep ! Tired to toss and turn in bed, you finally get up, and try your miraculous remedy (everyone has one !) whether an infusion, a pill, a cup of hot milk (with honey !) a chapter of Proust, but after a few long minutes, you return under the warm duvet.
The next day, your ruthless clock condemn you to go like a radar all the morning (may be even all the day long !)
ABACUS : I didn't have found all the words,
GRINDER - SKIMMER - SAUCER - BOWL - BLENDER - SILVER - CUP
MYTHICAL - ABSENT - CAVALRY - OSTRICH
Thanks a lot,

Hello
Here is my try, thank you for that exercise
a. Can you imagine a Ferrari or even a Mercedes Benz automatic car ? To me, they would be the same as the boring ‘pedal cars’ of my parents…
b) The nearer we got to our destination, the fewer pedestrians and activities we saw, thus the more scared of spending boring days there we were!
c) Her hair is getting grey: she will probably have it dyed but she can’t decide whether she will have it dyed brown or blonde.
d) Why are you taking so much luggage ? Who is going to carry it? I will make it roll ! We have to live with the times!
e) He will be gratetul to everyone who will give him their opinion about this tricky issue! Want to help him or not?
Why stay in bed when not sleeping ? Why then not do what one has to do without disturbing their household or their neighbourhood? Who has never experienced, at least once in their life, the torments of a sleepless night?
It is late, you are asleep on your feet, and you have been lying in bed for half an hour, at least…You need no particular reason or vexation, the fact is, you can’t sleep a wink! Tired of tossing and turning, you finally get up, try your magic bullet (everyone has got one!): either a herbal tea, or a tablet, hot milk, a chapter from Proust, then after a few but long minutes, you go back to bed and under your warm duvet…
The following day, your merciless alarm clock will surely sentence you to be on screen saver in the morning (maybe a whole day).
3) Insert the letters (or letter groups) so as to form words reading across, answering the clues on the left. A bonus word will read diagonally down.
Across:
1)mythical
2)ostrich
3)absent
4)cavalry
Bonus word = mystery

Hello !
Merci de votre feedback !

Hello dear here4u!
Here's the part of the exercise I've just finished. Thank you so much for giving it!
1) Translate into English:
Can you imagine a Ferrari, or even a Mercedes, using automatic transmission? To me, these would be like my parents' pedal cars', so without any interest.
The more we were nearing our destination, the less busy it was, and the more I was afraid of spending some very boring days!
She's beginning to go grey and is going to have her hair dyed, but she's hesitating between blond and dark and can't make up her mind.
d) " Pourquoi emportes-tu tant de bagages ? Qui va les porter ?"
-" C'est moi qui les ferai rouler ! Il faut vivre avec son temps !"
" Why do you take so much luggage? Who'll carry it?"
-" It's me who's/ I am - going to roll it! We must move with the times!".
He'll be grateful to anybody able to give him their opinion about that knotty question. Do you want to/ Will you - help him, or not?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Why stay/lie in bed while awake? Why not go about one's business without disturbing the household and the neighbours instead? Who has never gone through a sleepless night, at least once in their life?
It's late, you're sleepy and have been lying in bed for more than half an hour, at least...Without being particularly annoyed or for some specific reason,no, but you can't actually shut your eyes. Fed up with tossing and turning, you get up at long last to test your magic bullet ( who hasn't got one?): either a herb tea, or a tablet, some hot milk or a chapter from Proust, then, after several long minutes, you'll go back to bed to stay nice and cosy under your duvet...
The day after, your pitiless alarm clock will sentence you to a morning ( maybe the whole day) making your way automatically!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
As far as I'm concerned, I don't intend to go on strike during the holiday and will be happy to do your next exercise.

Merci d'avoir posté l'exercice 25, dear here4u. L'échéance du 28 décembre me paraît raisonnable.

Hello !
Thanks a lot to all of you ... for working and playing and smiling, and having headaches with my abacus ...
Congrats to those who were patient enough to do the exercice entirely and those who weren't ! You've given me very good things ...
1) Translate into English:
Can you imagine a Ferrari or even a Mercedes with automatic/shifts/transmissions? To me, they’d be the same as my parents’ 'pedal cars', without any real interest to drive... (the same as the boring ‘pedal cars’ of my parents’ time...)
Little problem to make the reader understand that both cars were supposed to be automatic !; 'the same ...AS'
The nearer we got to our destination, the fewer pedestrians/passers-by and the less animation/life/hustle there were, and the more I feared I was going to spend a few very boring days.
The parallel progression had to be applied to the adjective (near/close= both short adjectives + -er) ‘pedestrians’ = a countable in the plural => few => the fewer; /animation/life/hustle = all uncountables => 'less'. The second part of the parallel progression applies to ‘fear’. Some of you applied it to the ‘days of boredom.’
Her hair is greying, (graying )(going grey, getting grey etc. the –ing form is compulsory) she’s going to have it dyed but is hesitating/wavering whether she’ll have it coloured dark or blond.
-to have her hair dyed (hair = uncountable=> V and pronoun in the singular). If you write ‘make it dye’, you imply that you force the hairdresser to do that for you;to dye red=to paint blue=>to colour dark.’
d) 'Pourquoi emportes-tu tant de bagages ? Qui va les porter ?' 'C'est moi qui les ferai rouler ! Il faut vivre avec son temps !
Why are you taking so much luggage ? (so many pieces of luggage?) Who’s going to carry it? (them ?). I’ll roll it! (them). You have to roll (Bravo NP!)with the times (move with the times!)
- luggage = uncountable in the singular and ‘much’=> there is much luggage. If you want to specify that there are many cases, you must use ‘pieces /items of luggage’+ verb and pronoun in the plural.
- He’ll be grateful / thankful to anyone who will give him an opinion on this tricky problem/ burning issue! Do you want to help him or not ?
-He’ll be grateful/ thankful(/if anyone were to give /if anyone gave him). Very good idea:'if he were to be given an opinion about …'
Why stay in bed when you can’t sleep ? Why not then, attend to your business, without disturbing your household and neighbours?
-‘Why+ infinitive (without‘to), NO –ING’; ‘Why not+ infinitive’
Who has never experienced, at least once in their lives, the pangs of a sleepless night ?
It’s late and you’re awfully sleepy/you’re asleep on your feet/and you’ve been(mind the tense; with a duration, you can’t have a simple present!) in bed for half an hour, at least … No need for a special reason or worry…. But the fact is that you can’t/sleep a wink/shut an eye !
Tired of/Weary of turning and tossing in your bed, you get up at last, try your 'silver bullet'/ 'magic bullet’(Well done, Lucile!) /‘miracle remedy’(we all have one !): be it/whether it be/ either a herb tea, a tablet, a hot milk, a chapter from Proust, and after a while, you sneak back under your warm quilt…
The following morning, your pitiless/ruthless alarm will condemn you to a morning (or perhaps even a whole day) of living like a zombie /of being on the autopilot/of being woozy/of being out of it …
(I don't like the autopilot too much ... I do think that autopilots are quite smooth and comfortable whereas I feel that 'fonctionner au radar' is a lot more unpredictable and jerky ...
Congtratulations ! You did very well !

Hello !
I've just spent a little (fun) time going over all your different remarks and votes about the tea-cosies ...
Not easy to give a result ...
Surprisingly the mice are doing well and so is the elephant; as far as the ugliest one is concerned, the sun-bathing girl managed to get your unanimous votes
I feel I have to give a special award to the snowman which may be used with a mug and may, hopefully, 'reconcile' notrepere, all our American friends, and the British, with tea-parties ...

Etonnant, isn't it?
Si tu as un 'truc' ...)
