Virginia officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a U.S. state located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. Its name comes from the first Queen Elizabeth of England, known as the Virgin Queen because she never married.. Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" due to its status as a former dominion of the English Crown and "Mother of Presidents" due to the most U.S. presidents having been born there. Between 1660 and 1700 there were more and more slaves in Virginia but they no longer use slaves.Virginia is divided into 95 counties and 38 independent cities, which both operate the same way since independent cities are considered to be county-equivalent. This method of treating cities and counties equally is unique to Virginia, with only three other independent cities in the United States outside Virginia. The capital of the Virginia is Richmond and the most populated city is Virginia beach with 448479 habitants. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the state population was 8, 326,289 on July 1, 2014, a 4.07% increase since the 2010 United States Census. This includes an increase from net migration of 325,265 people into the Commonwealth since the 2010 census. Virginia is predominantly Christian and Protestant; Baptists are the largest single group with 27% of the population as of 2008. Virginia is an employment-at-will state;[153] its economy has diverse sources of income, including local and federal government, military, farming and business. Virginia has 4.1 million civilian workers, and one-third of the jobs are in the service sector. Virginia has the highest defense spending of any state providing the Commonwealth with around 900,000 jobs. 12% of all U.S. federal procurement money is spent in Virginia, the second-highest amount after is California. The Department of Defense is headquartered in Arlington at The Pentagon, the world's largest office building.
