Correction/Mythes et héros
Message de bubby23 posté le 19-04-2015 à 12:01:33 (S | E | F)
Bonjour

"I am going to talk about the notion of Myths and Heroes. First of all, we can define the word “myth” as a popular belief or tradition embodying the ideals and institutions of a society which can be an unfounded or false notion. To illustrate this notion, I have chosen two documents: a song about the American land, a caricature of an Arizona law and a cartoon about the presence of the Mexican immigrants in the United States.

We are going to ask if the American dream is still a reality.

The song is entitled “American Land” and is written by Brice Springsteen. It talks about the wave of immigration in America during the end of the 19th century until the 20th century. Brice Springsteen enounces mainly the hopes of the immigrants about this new land. At the beginning of the song, he describes the country like a wonderful place where you can become rich easily, like a land of abundance and luxury. He also mentions the opportunities to build his house and to work. In parallel, he underlines towards the end of his song the difficulties encountered by the immigrants when they arrive on American soil. Indeed, the singer refers to the working class which works in factories risking their lives. Therefore, the author criticizes the distorted vision of the future immigrants to a country they idealize.

The second document is a drawing of Joe Heller. In the picture, we can see the Statue of Liberty driving a red convertible in the desert of Arizona and next to her a policeman. We understand with the phrase below that if he arrests her, it’s because she is green-skinned and not white like him. In fact, the picture refers to the immigration law promulgated in Arizona in April 2010 which allows police to carry out a police control on suspicion of hiding. Indeed, illegal immigration is a major problem in the south of USA because the numbers of Mexican immigrants increase greatly. The cartoon denounces racism parodying the consequences of the new law which only focuses on skin color.
The last document is a cartoon drawn by KAL. There is many different characters. One that strikes us most is Uncle Sam, symbol of the USA. All around him, we can see many others characters washing his hair and cleaning his clothes which can be assimilated to Mexican immigrants. The cartoonist’s intentions are explicit. Many immigrants, especially from Mexico, take the low-paying job that Americans don’t want. That picture is a caricature of the actual society of America: the work of immigrants allows to keeping the country afloat. The Uncle Sam’s facial expression who is shocked to see a worker outing of his hat signify that the country is not aware of the importance of the role of the immigrants in the country well-being.

To conclude, in those documents there is an opposition between myth and reality. The myth is the vision that have the immigrants of United States like in the first document, where they think that America is the land of opportunities, the land of marvels. On the contrary, the reality is reflected by the harsh conditions of life of the immigrants and discrimination they can be victim like in the second document. But today, American even so must recognize the necessity of immigrants work in its country like shows the third document."
