Hello,
Could you help me please?
Question:We'll go out _____ it stops raining.
The question is from the English test #3107.
The answer for reference is 'as soon as' whereas what I chose was 'if'. I have no idea of why 'if' can't be the right.

the test gives nine possible conjunctions for 10 answers, so you might think you can use different possibilities, that the test is not tight enough, a few commas are missing as well.

Here is my try: (mistakes in blue, test correction in green)

1) although it was very hot, she went out with an over-coat.
2. Peter called while you were out.
3. because since she's got little money, she can't buy clothes.
4. We saw Jim as he was getting off the bus.
5. It will be three years since I met Bobby.
6. My son phones me every afternoon as soon as when he's back home from school.
7. I'm going shopping, if you need anything, I'll buy it.
8. We'll go out as soon as it stops raining.
9. Don't come unless I call you!
10. She left him because he was cheating on her.
I got two "mistakes", although various possibilities existed.(since in 10, if in 9, as soon as in 8,because in 3)

Now, the test uses two meanings of since, and if you consider that you may use the remaining eight conjunctions only once, the correcting is logical from the creator's point of view. "if" is needed in 7, so it is in theory not available for another answer.

Don't worry! "We'll go out if it stops raining." is correct in general English.

I'll just add that when a word can be used more than once, it is noticed before you start doing the exercise.
