Spaces and exchanges
The notion "Spaces and exchanges" deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men and different societies. Our world is built on the exploration and conquest of new spaces. The different cultural, economic, sociological and language interactions have shaped and characterised our modern-day world – sometimes for better, sometimes for worse.
What kinds of exchanges link the different spaces?
I will use the sample of the Irish history to witness the different forms of contentious exchanges between two spaces with their own interests. I will also show that immigration is a mutual benefit in spite of problems, conflicts…
So at first, I will introduce the movie “Michael Collins” and the different ways of exchange.
This movie relates the Ireland’s struggle for independence. The British government since 700 years rules this space. Michael Collins and Edmon Devalera embody the different forms of exchanges used to deal with England to achieve the main goal of the Irish nation. The exchanges between the two spaces were based on violence; the bloody Sunday illustrates this mutual relation with the firering during a football match in reaction to the murder of British agents. Despite the massive intervention of violence during the Irish Civil war the treaty between England and Ireland represents a diplomatic form of exchange.
The immigration is an exchange in the way that it is profitable for the country.
Barack Obama made a speech call “The Dreamers”. He explains the situation of many young people brought illegally in the United State by their parents. For them the situation is really unfair. The president explains that during all their childhood they went to school, play with other children and acted as American people but when they want to apply for a job or have a driver license they can’t. In consequence, Obama decided to make (the ?) United-States’ immigration policy more efficient and more just for this young people called “The dreamers”. It’s an asset for United State in terms of diversification and open minding.
Exchanges between different spaces could be destructive as war or productive and can lead to improvement.
