Bonjour,
Where did high school proms come from?
Everybody know the famous legend of high school proms. In fact, in the USA every year there are numerous proms in every high school. This is to symbolise the end of school and the beginning of university. So proms nights are very important and a cultural fact in the USA.
But what we have to know is that, even if the USA hold the high school proms legend, the organisation of proms nights comes from France. Indeed, this tradition is not an anglo-saxon tradition. In the beginning of the XII century, it is the students in Paris who decided to instaure it. So the gown are french and very old. But this tradition has been judged backward-looking in May 1968 and then has disappeared in France. But this tradition is on the way of returning.
So let’s come back to the USA promenade. In the early days of high school proms, the nighttime dance served a similar function to a debutante ball. Early proms were times of firsts: the first adult social event for teenagers; the first time taking the family car out after dark; the first real dress-up affair… etc But it also served as an announcement for the « best couple » after the prom.
To talk more about the origin of proms nights, I will say that we have found hight school yearbooks only until the 1930s and 1940s in the USA but some people believe that proms may have existed as early as the late 1800s.
But proms nights have changed along the years, in the early 1900s, prom was a simple tea dance where high school seniors wore their Sunday best. In the 1920s and 1930s, prom expanded into an annual class banquet where students wore party clothes and danced afterward. As Americans gained more money and leisure time in the 1950s, proms became more extravagant and elaborate, bearing similarity to today’s proms.
As regards the attire, it has not changed a lot along the decades. Boys usually dress in black or white formal wear, regardless of the time of the event, sometimes paired with brightly colored ties, in some cases in colors matching their date’s dress. Most are rented from stores that specialize in formal wear rentals. Girls wear traditional ladies' dresses or evening gowns and adorn themselves with ladies’ costume such as earrings and a necklace. Traditionally girls wear perfume, and make-up such as eyeshadow, lipstick and blush. Girls also wear a corsage, given to them by their dates, and girls give boys matching boutonières to be worn on their lapels. With everything, the cost of prom in the United States averaged $1139 per family in 2013 that is to say 1015 euros.
