Voici le N° 43, inédit, tout frais sorti de mon cerveau 'torturant' ( et torturé! ) ... un parce que, comme vous l'avez dit, 'vous les valez bien !' Courage et inventivité, comme d'habitude !
Correction collective le lundi 8 Juin, si vous le voulez bien ! (Le 44 sera en ligne pendant le week-end pour les voraces ...) Force and Courage ! I know you have both...

I) Translate into English :
1) Je savais qu'il était égoïste et que seul, l'argent l'intéressait ... Mais je ne pouvais pas imaginer qu'il l'était à ce point ...
2) Je ne comprends vraiment pas où tu veux en venir ? Soit tu m'expliques enfin toute la vérité, soit tu arrêtes tes sous - entendus et te tais à jamais …
3) A quelle réunion assistes-tu ? En fait, je suis bien ennuyée ... Mercredi, j'ai trois réunions très intéressantes en même temps. Deux sont presque au même endroit, mais comment faire ? Je n'ai pas le don d'ubiquité ...
4) Je ne peux pas m'empêcher de lui en vouloir ... Son but est d'empêcher la fête de bien se dérouler, c'est clair ...
5) Elle appartient à un club privé, comme sa mère l'avait fait avant elle, d'ailleurs …

Il est difficile et demande de la réflexion ...

Thanks a lot Here4U for this not-so-easy exercise which I had quite a few difficulties with.
And I hope I wasn't out of line with my translation of " hot women"
I've finished my try unless you want me to change something immediately ?

I)
1) I knew he was selfish and that only money attracted him ... But I couldn't imagine it was that much...
2) I really don't understand what you are getting at ? Either you finally explain the whole truth to me, either you stop your insinuations and remain silent forever.
3) Which meeting are you attending ? I'm actually quite annoyed... On Wednesday, I've got three very interesting meetings at the same time. Two of them are almost at the same place, but what can be done ? I don't have the gift of being everywhere at once ...

Bien que la maison soit petite et résonne, à tel point que le clic sur le bouton du téléviseur, le débouchage d'une bouteille et le grincement du sommier de Nelson peuvent être entendus partout, il n'obtient aucune réponse. Il entend l'écoulement régulier de l'eau, monte l'escalier. La salle de bains à l'étage est complètement embuée. C'est incroyable comme les femmes ~~torrides peuvent supporter autant de bains.~~ arrivent à supporter l'eau si chaude.

Il est vrai que la proximité de "hot" et "women" peut paraître a priori ambiguë.
Toutefois, sur le modèle de "How hot the water is", et en notant qu'ici "women" est indénombrable car désignant les femmes en général, il me semble que "hot" ne peut s'appliquer qu'à l'eau...

Ok! Vous n'aimez pas l'écriture d'Updike dans cette oeuvre ...
Lakata ... Ton explication était bien partie ... Mais je ne peux pas te laisser écrire ( et surtout penser) ce que tu as écrit sur 'women' .
'Women est DENOMBRABLE PLURIEL ( IRREGULIER) et rien d'autre ! ( comme 'men', 'children'... et 'oxen'!
En général, quand on peine devant un auteur, il est souhaitable de persister un peu ... Et il peut arriver que l'on finisse par adorer ... Allez ! Je n'en demande pas tant ! Bonne soirée !

Je ne saisis pas très bien ce que veut dire " pluriel irrégulier". Tu nous expliqueras !
J'avais pourtant bien lu dans le OALD que "woman" était "uncountable" quand il désignait la femme en général...

[uncountable] female humans in general (informal)
She's all woman! (= has qualities that are typical of women)

Cela s'applique à des expressions (familières) où les mots woman, man, child etc sont pris comme entités abstraites, plutôt que uncountable, terme mal choisi à mon avis. La preuve en est la définition de uncountable dans ce même dictionnaire:
a noun that is uncountable cannot be made plural or used with a or an, for example water, bread and information

Pluriel irrégulier = un mot qui ne prend pas de S au pluriel mais change de forme, comme child-children/ foot-feet,woman-women etc.

J'ai commencé à envoyer les corrections individuelles ... mais vous avez encore jusqu'à demain soir tard pour finir ou faire celui-ci ...%- Correction collective demain soir!) Il y en a qui s'inquiètent déjà pour le 44 (en ligne, mais que je ne regarderai pas avant lundi au mieux ...) Alors, cool ! Pas de panique !!! (et vous savez bien qu'au 'pire', si ce n'est pas une habitude,(et même...) je corrige toujours les retardataires !

First, please, my Friends, pardon me for the difficulty of these exercises... It's quite tricky to satisfy all sorts of appetites with the same dish... (I'm used to it...) Go on doing what you've done ... Here, you may feel free to 'pick and choose' and satisfy yourselves...
Your work was very good, and I noticed your effort, your persistence and for many, your ease and progress. I'm thankful to all of you for doing so well.

Here's the collective correction... a medley of all your tries plus a few explanations ...

I) Translate into English :

I knew he was selfish and (that he was) interested in money alone/only, but I couldn’t imagine he was that much!

- To be selfish = to be egoistic :
- to be interested IN something
- Ne pas oublier que la forme passive est très employée, très naturellement, en anglais.
- so much = tant ; si vous voulez insister sur le côté outrancier de l’action, n’oubliez pas ‘that much’ ; à l’écrit, that est en italiques, à l’oral, il est accentué. (= ‘as selfish as that.’)

2) Je ne comprends vraiment pas où tu veux en venir ? Soit tu m'expliques enfin toute la vérité, soit tu arrêtes tes sous - entendus et te tais à jamais …
- I can’ t get what you’re driving at… Either you explain the whole truth to me, finally, or you stop your insinuations and keep quiet forever.

- en venir ; où veux-tu en venir ? = aussi : ‘can't understand what you’re driving/getting at’. To ‘come to’ peut aussi être utilisé.
- Soit … soit = Either … or …
- Attention à la construction du verbe ‘explain’ => ‘to explain something TO somebody’ => ‘will you explain the solution to me, please ?’
- ‘I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth’ ; dire la vérité = to tell the truth ; (to tell ET détermination (= the) de la vérité qui est (normalement) unique. Rien que la vérité = ‘Nothing but the truth’.

-assister à une réunion/conférence = to attend a meeting/lecture.
- don d’ubiquité = être à plusieurs endroits à la fois= I don’t have the gift of ubiquity = I cant be at several places at /the same moment/ once...

4) Je ne peux pas m'empêcher de lui en vouloir ... Son but est d'empêcher la fête de bien se dérouler, c'est clair ...
I can’t help resenting him. His aim is to prevent/keep the party from being a success, that’s clear to me!

- Ici, j’ai joué avec les deux sens d’empêcher : Il ne peut pas s’empêcher de = he can’t help + V + ing. L’introduction d’un empêcheur et d’un empêché indique le verbe : to prevent/keep somebody from doing something.
- En vouloir à quelqu'un = to resent somebody = to bear/hold a grudge against somebody.
- Bien se dérouler = se dérouler avec succès.

(4) ‘can be heard everywhere’ = to hear est un verbe de perception involontaire qui est précédé du modal ‘can’ : il ne doit pas se traduire en français. ‘I can hear you ! Stop screaming !’ = ‘Je t’entends ! Arrête de crier !’ Ici, en français, j'ai préféré la forme active, moins lourde.
(5) je préfère ‘monte l’escalier’ à ‘grimpe’ qui me semble un peu trop ‘escalader’.
(6) Où est ‘l’écologie’ ? Certains d’entre vous ne prennent qu’un bain dans leur ‘salle de bain’ et la changent ! Les ‘gâcheurs’ …
Je sais que l’on dit les 2, mais ‘salle de bains’ est quand même donné en 1er dans le TLF online (et au singulier une seule fois !) et donné seul dans mon Robert en 7 volumes ! Donc, je continue à chasser le gaspi !
(7) ‘Les femmes chaudes’ ou 'les femmes torrides’ ou 'sexy' étaient amusantes … à première lecture on pouvait se 'faire avoir' ! surtout qu'avec Updike, on peut s’attendre à tout ! Bravo à NP quand il qualifie certains écrits comme étant ‘steamy’ … Bien trouvé ! Quand Rabbit monte, Janice se prépare à rejoindre son amant Charlie Stavros. Je ne peux pas m’imaginer que le rapprochement des deux mots soit le simple fait du hasard... Dommage qu’il ne soit plus … J’aurais bien écrit pour lui demander …
