Bac/Myths and heroes
Message de svetlanagorby posté le 06-06-2015 à 18:52:31 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,

I am going to deal with the notion Myth and Heroes, a hero is a role model, someone that we want to imitate. He can be a mortal person, like anybody else, or a fictional character. We can ask ourselves, how these heroes can influence us on our life? I’m going to show, in a first part, how a common person can become successful and mythical. Then, I’m going to deal with how heroes can influence people.

To begin, I’m going to define what success is. We can say that a successful person is someone who has influence. For instance, a political man become successful when people support him. We can also talk about Oprah Winfrey, a talk show host. She’s the most, influential person in America.
There are only few successful persons in the world because it’s really hard. We can stay with the example of Oprah Winfrey, in the beginning she was a not from a wealthy social class, she’s an African-American woman in the 50s.
I quote from this text: “This little girl born to simple means has become one of the 20th century’s most influential people in America and has touched people worldwide”.
Although is simple means she managed to reach the top. And she only succeeds thanks to her self-determination and because she’s strong-willed. She believes in the American dream, that it’s to say that the only way to become successful is to work hard and beyond your limits.
In 1973, she earns a spot in television news. Then she relocated to Chicago and her show became the number one rated talk-show in Chicago. In 1985, this talk show was renamed “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, it’s broadcasted to 144 countries. Oprah Winfrey is now present in all area of the media: on the web, on the radio, on the television. Now, she has millions of fan, her influence is indisputable.

A mythical person is someone that isn’t at own reach. They seem stronger, more intelligent or more courageous that normal people. They do what seems impossible for us, they go from rags to riches and they make their dreams come true. We can talk about Thomas Edison, a genius of the creation with huge imagination. And it’s why his nickname is “The wizard of Menlo Park”. According to the article from the New-York times, Edison was considerate as a wizard.
He is considered like that because he created a lot of things, which at his time, was unimaginable. For instance, in 1877, he invented the phonograph; it’s an ancient appliance which reproduces sound, a kind of first phone. In 1879 he invented the first kind of light bulb which had revolutionized the lighting. In 1891, Edison created the Kinetoscope. It’s a simple viewer which is the precursor of the cinematography.
A mythical person is someone who creates things that nobody could imagine before its creation.

Voici la seconde partie:

Thomas Edison has influence the life of numerous persons with his creations, but he also influence some person with his career. For example, there is Steve Jobs. We can find a lot of similarities between the two men. They were clever men; In spite of they had less formal schooling. They both had terrific tempers with single minded. And thanks to that they had an early success, even if sometimes they failed they keep on. Both have worked in several product areas, but always related to entrainment. We can think that it’s only coincident but Steve Job has admitted during an interview that he was strongly influenced by Thomas Edison. He admires Edison for his personality and for what he has done. It’s an example where we can see that mythical person can influence people career.
We can also talk about Andrew Carnegie. He was a Scottish-American industrialist and entrepreneur. He started in the textile industry and then considerably developed the American steel industry between the Civil War and the early 20th century. He became extremely wealthy and donated most of his money to build libraries, schools and universities in the United States. It’s a rag to riches life, in a beginning he was only a bobbin boy and at the end he became the richest man of the world. And he doesn’t use this money for him but he decided to use to build education’s buildings. He influenced the life of a lot of persons who, thank to him, have been able to study. They have been able to go out from poverty like he done before.
B) By their moral
Another way to influence people with hero, it’s through fictional characters. For example, the Walt Disney’s animated movies who have morals. For example the Disney’s movie Mulan, explains that you can be who you want. It’s not because you’re a woman that you can fight as a man do. We can also talk about Pocahontas, which gives a lessons against the racism. I think that these kinds of lessons are really good for children and even for the adults. Its can give us self-confidence and the strength to keep on, no matter what the others can say. Moreover, even if some of the Disney Movie have more than 50 years, the lessons can always being applied in our society: Appreciate the present, don’t lie, don’t judge the physics, be kind…

To conclude, Myths and Heroes can influence people with the way they become successful, like Oprah Winfrey or Thomas Edison. They can influence our life with their creation, like Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs or Walt Disney. All this persons or characters are a kind of example to follow in our life, a kind of goal.
