.

Introduction :
The notion I’m going to deal with is « Myths and heroes ». A myth can be an event or a belief that may be true, mythology includes the legends of our history, our religions. A hero is a person who is admired for his courage, achievements or noble qualities, it’s a person who can be taken as a role model. To illustrate this notion, one of the best subject is Indian people in the American society since the 19th century. We can ask the question : How did Indians fight to keep their integrity within a new America ? Firstly, I will focus on an Indian war, which is Wounded Knee, and then link this with the myth of the famous Marlon Brando.

I. Native American cultures in the United States include a wide array of socially and geographically diverse groups. Displaced and often persecuted by European explorers and the settlers that followed, Native Americans have struggled to maintain their ancestral practices, while increasing their representation in American political and cultural life. One of the most famous battle is without a doubt Wounded Knee which was the most murdering of all. In December 1890, the US Army slaughtered 300 men, women and children at Wounded Knee Creek, in South Dakota. Living conditions were, at the time, already unhealthy and disastrous which got the extermination of Indians speeding up. Originally, American were afraid of Indians because of the Ghost Dance they used to practice before battles. Controlled by James Force, American soldiers decimated entire families of Sioux Indians whose leader was Bigfoot. In December the 29th, this slaughter marks the end of Indian wars and also the end of the Frontier (which was a limit during the Conquest of the West between European settlements and Indian territories).
So this military operation will always remain in people’s minds because of the savagery and the wickedness of Americans, it is still a myth in the US history.

Transition : Transition : Even if the fate of Indians hasn’t been very worrying for some, one of the most popular actor of the 19th century, Marlon Brando, took it really personally.

II. Marlon Brando was a really powerful actor all over the world, his wonderful performances as an actor in films such as The Wild One or later The Godfather made him to the top, thanks to that, he got several prices, including one Oscar for The Godfather on March the 5th 1973, an Oscar he declined at the Academy Award for the Best Actor. The Native American actress Sacheen Littlefeather attended the ceremony in Brando’s place, stating that the actor couldn’t accept the award, as he was protesting Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans in film.
His Oscar statement expressed support for the American Indian Movement (AIM) and referenced the ongoing situation at Wounded Knee. Indeed, there was a demonstration that lasted 71 days (almost a 100 years later than the Battle of Wounded Knee). The fact that an Apache (member of the tribe) came for him meant a lot, and made his speech more powerful than ever.
After that he was interviewed, in the Dick Cavett Show on June the 7th 1973 in which he declares that after reading a book called « Indian of Americas », he realized that he didn’t know anything about Native Americans. In his mind, America is a country which fight for freedom and justice but it simply applies to white people. During Indian wars, the white were the most rapacious and torturing, and nowadays, Indians are still misrepresented in history books, films and reporting because many things aren’t revealed concerning this huge part of American history.

Conclusion :
To conclude I would simply say that Indians will always have a great impact in the society, and the battle of Wounded Knee illustrates it perfectly. Nowadays, the multiculturalism makes people forget where they come from but Indians never stopped safekeeping their ethnic traditions and culture, so they can be considered as heroes. Another hero I mentioned is Brando because he crossed the selfishness of a lot of stars by taking advantage of his worldwide power to help Indians.

Merci d'avance.

Conclusion :
To conclude I would simply say that Indians will always have a great impact in the society (la société en générale donc pas the) , and the battle of Wounded Knee illustrates it perfectly. Nowadays, the multiculturalism (même chose) makes people forget where they come from but Indians never stopped safekeeping (j'aurais dis safeguarding) their ethnic traditions and culture, so they can be considered as heroes. Another hero I mentioned is Brando because he crossed the selfishness (he crossed the selfishness ? I don't understand) of a lot of stars by taking advantage of his worldwide power to help Indians.

Bonne chance !
