Exercise 63/ on the threshold of 2016.
Hello dear Friends, lovers of English, hard workers!

I hope your stockings were full of wonderful presents and that you’re now ready to enter 2016.
Let’s be foolish enough to have the craziest wishes and especially that of a peaceful year for every man on Earth. Selfishly, I will wish you The FORCE to go on working your English with the same enthusiasm but most of all, the health to work and have fun to your heart’s content!
This exercise will be corrected on January 10th, 2016. It is, of course, a and you’re GREATER THAN EVER!

I) Translate into English:
A) « Tu as le même âge que lui, mais franchement, tu fais bien plus jeune... » « Mais non! Je n'ai pas son âge ... Il a 3 ans de plus que moi, mais je crois que travailler toute ma vie avec des adolescents m'a aidé à rester jeune de caractère. »

B) Je ne trouve pas le petit pot à lait en porcelaine de Wedgwood et j'en aurai besoin demain lorsque les voisins viendront prendre un « cream tea » pour les remercier de leur accueil chaleureux. Trouve-moi aussi les tasses assorties et lave-les bien car elles n'ont pas servi depuis une éternité.

C) « Vous êtes priés de bien vous assurer de la fermeture de la porte derrière vous. En effet, une tentative d'effraction a eu lieu ici la semaine dernière, en plein jour ... Votre sécurité dépend de vous. »

D) Si tout le monde faisait attention à ne pas claquer les portes et à mettre des pantoufles en arrivant à la maison, il y aurait beaucoup moins de bruit et chacun pourrait dormir à l'heure qu'il veut, quelle qu'elle soit !

II) Translate into French:
They had wanted him to be a doctor. Our son the doctor. He was a clever boy, and ought to do good in the world. They had a puritanical streak, and mistrusted display. They had brought him up to finish what was on his plate, speak nicely to the neighbours and get through his homework. Now he filled the house with Beatles music, had a girlfriend with her skirt barely covering her behind, and said he wanted to study architecture. They couldn’t think where they’d gone wrong.

I)
A) "You are the same age as he is, but frankly, you look much younger..." "Absolutely not ! I'm not his age ... He is three years older than I am, but I guess working with teenagers all life long has helped me keep a young spirit."
B) I can't find the small Wedgwood china milk jug and I will need it tomorrow when the neighbours come and have a cream tea to thank them for their warm welcome. Find the matched cups for me as well and wash them well as they haven't been used for ages.
C) "You are urged to check that the door is closed when leaving. Indeed, an attempted break-in took place here last week in broad daylight... Your safety depends on you"
D) If everyone took care not to slam the doors shut and to put on slippers while walking in, much less noise could be heard, and each one could sleep at whatever time he wishes !

Ils avaient voulu qu'il fût docteur. Notre fils le docteur. C'était un enfant intelligent et il devrait faire du bien dans le monde.
Ils avaient un côté puritain et éprouvaient de la méfiance envers l'exhibition. Ils l'avaient élevé à finir son assiette, parler poliment aux voisins et finir ses devoirs.
Maintenant, il envahissait la maison avec de la musique des Beatles, avait une petite amie avec une jupe lui couvrant à peine le derrière, et disait qu'il voulait étudier l'architecture. Ils n'arrivaient pas à se figurer où ils avaient fait erreur.

B) I can't manage to find the Wedgwood little china milk pot and I will need it to-morrow when the neighbours come and have a "cream tea" in order for us to express our gratitude for their friendly welcome. Will you also fetch me the matching tea-cups and wash them thoroughly as they have not been used for years.
C) Would you mind making sure you lock up the doors behind you. Indeed There was an attempted burglary here last week in broad daylight...........Your safety is up to you.
D) I wish everyone would pay attention not slamming the doors and putting on slippers when comming in. There would be much less noise and everyone could be able to sleep at the time he chooses whatever be it.

The feasts are over and it is with relief that we resume our Here’s exercises. As usual , dear Here we have been spoiled… but we love the difficulties. Thanks so much . And I want to add “ happy New year “to You, to Lucile83 and all my classmates.

Ce n’est pas uniquement la porcelaine bleue très caractéristique que tout le monde connaît, mais toute une variété de produits de toutes couleurs et de tous styles. (2) Ici, le gallicisme « c’était un homme » est indispensable.
(3) « to do good »= faire le bien, être utile à la communauté.
(4) « mistrusted display » ; « exhibitionnisme » était trop connoté à mon avis et ne convenait pas du tout. Le nom « affichage » fait référence à autre chose …
(5) couvrait à peine le derrière/ les fesses ; le mot employé en anglais est bien « bottom » ; nous ne devons donc pas hésiter à employer « l’équivalent ».
