Brick lane is a british movie of Sarah GAVRON came out in 2007. It relates the story of a young woman, Nazneem forced to leave her country, her family to submit in London and get married with the man with whom she is promised. But, where is Brick Lane , this london borough and does it mean? Brick lane is a long street in a london borough of Tower Hamlets, in the East of London. Throughout history, Brick Lane welcomed differentes communities , Fleming, French, Jews and today she constitu the neighbourhood’s beating heart of the communities Bangladeshi and indian of London.
In 80’s , Nazneem the protagonist of this movie is only a young seventeen years old Bangladeshi woman when she feels compelled to leave the Bangladesh and all her family, for get married with Chanu Ahmed, a man much older than her. She also finds herself in Brick lane in London, in a country where she dont know the language. She is now devoted to her family life, her children, in this borough where she confronts to the modernity, to the racism, the solitary confinement. And its for this reason that we chose this movie. In fact, Nazneem is a really young woman and we cant en temps qu'adolescente ne pas imaginer qu'il s'agit de notre propre histoire.
Because its true that was born in France is a luck and brought us many is our present and futur life. Whats more, we cant deny that if we was born in Bangladesh we would have the same history.
But as well, what drew us to this movie is the striking opposition found between the green landscape of the Bangkadesh which gives rise liberty and naïvety and the greyish walls of the city of Brick Lane, a representation of incarceration and happiness which is faint forever. A past of insousciance live together with a daily existence asphysiating. Nazneem’s spirit travel by flash back from one word to another , from an age to another, bringing her a dose of hope.
Whats more, that what is interesting in Brick Lane is the dream and hope that can be seen.Notwithstanding what is happening to her, Nazneem writes regulary to her sister thus keeping a link with her childhood, her former freedom, her family. When she meets Karim, a young man, her life will be change. He will change her life vision, he should allow her to create link with her husband, to impose herself in society also as a woman, for take decisions and controle her life . She begins to enjoy her life and her place in her new family and in this new society.
This movie particulary concerns us given it offers an amzing evolution of the characters. It translates the evolutions of a form of love to another. The transition between infancy and mature age. But still the transition between a native land and the world to her new home.
