Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a writer and journalist was born on March 6, 1927 in Aracataca. It’s a city in the North-Est of Columbia. He died On April 17, 2014. He had been diagnosed with cancer in the late 1990s. He writing fictions and non-fiction. His fiction work introduced readers to magical realism, which combines more conventional storytelling with fantasy. He is considered as one of the most significant authors of the 20th century.

The USA threatened to invade Columbia if he doesn’t protect the company of United Fruit. So, a lot of worker was killed by the Columbia army because they went on strike. In One hundred of Solitude, Gabriel Garcia Marquez talks about this massacre. We can say that his grandparents influenced his early development very strongly. After the death of his grandfather in 1938, he had joined his parents. He had helped his parent with a job because they have financial problems.

But after a moment, he return in Barranquilla and he have a good result. For his studies in high school of Zipaquira, the Principal has presented to Gabriel Garcia Marquez two major poets : Eduardo Carranza and Jorge Rojas. After his high school diploma, he studied law and journalism in Bogotá and Cartagena because his father wanted this.

He began his career as a journalist in 1948. For his job, he was travelling in Columbia, France, Mexico and Spain. He was also a film maker. He has produced Erendira. This is the sad history of Erendira, a girl prostitute by his grandmother. Gabriel Garcia Marquez has published his first novel in 1955: Leaf Storm. It’s a novel about a dead person relate by a colonel, his daughter and his grandson. After, all his book was a world success as we can see.
- His Nobel Prize
He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982 for his book: One hundred of Solitude.This books was a big success in the world. Five years after his publication, this book was publish in 23 country. Gabriel Garcia Marquez was very surprised by this success.
So, this book talk about a Traveller’s prophecy on the Buendia family in Macondo, a village of South America. They have sentence to one hundred of Solitude. We will follow this family across the ages: birth, life and decline. They will experience revolution, civil war, destruction…. It’s a mythical epic.
After one hundred of Solitude, his books was between journalism, history and popular novel.

Love in the time of Cholera (1985) is a love story. Florentino, a young telegraph poor and Fermina, a beautiful woman swear to get married. But, one day, Fermina weds Juvénal, a young doctor. So, Florentino tries to become rich to deserve the Fermina’s love.
The story of a Shipwrecked Sailor (1970) is the testimony of Luis Alejandro Velasco. He is the only survivor of eight columbian sailor, fell inthe sea in 1955. Indeed, they was on the war ship Caldas. So, this book is the story of ten days of sinking.
In Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1981) Vicario brothers have announce their murderous file. So, all the village is on alert excerpt Santiago Nasar. At the dawn, in front of his door, his body is found. This book will narrate : why this crime coudn’t be évoid ?
- Movies about books
A lot of his books was adapted in movies. For exemple, in 1986, there is Chronicle of a death foretold and in 2007 there is in the time of Cholera.
